Darrin Hammons says she can barely see a sliver of water in Canyon Lake when she looks out the windows at Equinox Inn further noting that ‘we have definitely notice a drop, as per an article published by KSAT.com.
Hammons said she didn’t see many changes this summer since her inn isn’t centred on the lake.
Hammons and her husband, Keith, own and run the bed and breakfast near the lake. With record-breaking heat and a prolonged drought, Comal County business owners were anxious about what tourism might look like in Summer 2023. However, the Canyon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce stated that they are still seeing business.
“So many of our boat ramps are closed because the boats can’t enter the water safely. So that has put a strain on some of the outfitters that we refer people to,” KAT.com quoted Hammons as saying.
Notably, June, July and August were all the best months outside of 2022.
Nikki Orsak is a member of the Canyon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors. She stated to KSAT.com that in the summer of 2022, the chamber learnt a lesson to focus promotional efforts on the Canyon Lake neighbourhood outside of the lake itself.
“A lot of our business is rooted in small-town, old-fashioned business,” Orsak said. “I think what it’s done is it’s really pushed people outside their comfort zones out here to kind of look for other things to do.”
While the future remains unknown, Hammons is looking forward to the autumn and winter seasons.
