Highlighting its dedication to sustainability, Carnival Corporation & plc , the globe’s leading cruise company, has introduced a fresh solar park at its Amber Cove Cruise Center in the Dominican Republic. With over 1,800 solar panels, the park will cater to 80% of the port’s energy needs.

Carnival Corporation, alongside Carnival Cruise Line and Amber Cove Cruise Center, marked the occasion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event drew government officials, industry representatives, and community leaders, including Joel Santos, Minister of the Presidency of the Dominican Republic, and Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line.

“As we bring guests to enjoy the beauty and rich culture of the Dominican Republic, we also take our environmental stewardship here and everywhere we visit very seriously,” said Duffy. “With this new solar park in Amber Cove, we are furthering our commitment to sustainability at our destinations by focusing on renewable energy sources to power the vast majority of the port’s needs.”

“On behalf of the Government, we celebrate this achievement, which makes Amber Cove the first cruise terminal in the country with a project of this scale,” said Joel Santos, minister of the presidency of the Dominican Republic. “This project will undoubtedly contribute to the production of clean energy and environmental sustainability in Puerto Plata, the first tourist destination in the Dominican Republic.”

Transitioning to renewable solar energy will supplant most of the port’s current energy sources, diminishing its dependence on fossil fuels and thereby curbing greenhouse gas emissions. The solar park is poised to slash emissions by about 1,000 tons annually, equivalent to planting over 30,000 trees.

Situated on the Dominican Republic’s north coast near Puerto Plata, Amber Cove Cruise Center is a flagship port among the eight destinations and private islands under Carnival Corporation’s ownership. Spanning 25 acres, the port offers an array of amenities including restaurants, shops, bars, pools, a zipline, waterfront and hilltop cabanas, as well as numerous shore excursion options like snorkeling and waterfall adventures. Carnival Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Holland America Line, and Princess Cruises are among the four cruise lines regularly docking at the port, which welcomed its millionth guest last December, constituting over half of all cruise guest visits to the Dominican Republic in 2023.
