Carnival Corporation Surpasses Key 2030 Environmental Targets Ahead of Schedule

In its 2023 Sustainability Report, Carnival Corporation has achieved several critical 2030 environmental objectives well before their anticipated timelines, particularly in the realms of climate action and circular economy, which are focal points of the company’s sustainability agenda. Notably, the company has significantly reduced its absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by over 10% compared to its peak year of 2011, despite a 30% increase in capacity since then. Furthermore, efforts to promote a circular economy have resulted in substantial decreases in waste production and its impact. Highlights from the 2023 report include:

GHG Intensity: Carnival Corporation is on track to meet its 2030 target four years early, committing to a minimum 20% reduction in GHG intensity by 2026 compared to 2019 levels, measured on a lower berth capacity basis. This progress is expected to surpass the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2030 carbon intensity reduction goals.

Shore Power: Surpassing its 2030 objective in 2023, Carnival Corporation now leads the industry with 64% of its fleet capable of shore power, achieving this milestone seven years ahead of schedule. Efforts are underway to collaborate with port authorities globally to increase the adoption of this vital technology.

Particulate Matter: The company has recorded a remarkable 68% reduction in absolute particulate matter emissions compared to the 2015 baseline, surpassing its 2030 goal of a 50% reduction.

Food Waste: Carnival Corporation achieved a 38% reduction in food waste per person compared to the 2019 baseline, coming close to its 2025 goal of a 40% reduction. Progress continues towards the target of a 50% reduction in food waste by 2030.

Single-Use Items: The company has significantly reduced single-use items and plastics, eliminating approximately 500 million single-use items from its fleet by the end of 2023 compared to 2018, surpassing its 2030 goal of a 50% reduction.

Advanced Waste Water Treatment Systems (AWWTS): Carnival Corporation is nearing its 2030 objective of outfitting 75% of its fleet capacity with AWWTS, having installed systems covering 70% of fleet capacity by 2023, improving the purification of onboard water to municipal-water quality before release.

Additionally, Carnival Corporation is making strides towards meeting or exceeding its remaining 2030 climate action and circular economy goals, including advancements in its liquefied natural gas (LNG) program, Advanced Air Quality Systems (AAQS), Air Lubrication Systems (ALS), and biofuels initiatives, among others.

Furthermore, the company remains committed to fostering inclusivity among its diverse workforce of 160,000 employees globally and cultivating a positive workplace environment. As part of its sustainability strategy, Carnival Corporation is dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism and creating shared value with its destination partners and local communities.

The 2023 sustainability report of Carnival Corporation adheres to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Universal Standard 2021 and incorporates the company’s third annual disclosure in accordance with the Sustainability Accounting Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
