Highlighting its dedication to environmental stewardship, Carnival Corporation & plc, the premier cruise company globally, has recently inaugurated a solar park at its Amber Cove Cruise Center located in the Dominican Republic. This installation, consisting of over 1,800 solar panels, is set to provide 80% of the port’s energy needs.

The launch was marked by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event that saw participation from notable figures in government, the cruise industry, and the local community. Attendees included Joel Santos, the Dominican Republic’s Minister of the Presidency, and Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line.

“As we bring guests to enjoy the beauty and rich culture of the Dominican Republic, we also take our environmental stewardship here and everywhere we visit very seriously,” said Duffy. “With this new solar park in Amber Cove, we are furthering our commitment to sustainability at our destinations by focusing on renewable energy sources to power the vast majority of the port’s needs.”

“On behalf of the Government, we celebrate this achievement, which makes Amber Cove the first cruise terminal in the country with a project of this scale,” said Joel Santos, minister of the presidency of the Dominican Republic. “This project will undoubtedly contribute to the production of clean energy and environmental sustainability in Puerto Plata, the first tourist destination in the Dominican Republic.”

This move towards solar energy represents a significant step in reducing the port’s dependence on traditional fossil fuels, thereby cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions. It is estimated that the solar park will decrease greenhouse gas emissions by around 1,000 tons annually, which is akin to the environmental benefit of planting over 30,000 trees.

Amber Cove Cruise Center, nestled on the Dominican Republic’s scenic north coast near Puerto Plata, is a premier destination among Carnival Corporation’s portfolio of eight exclusive island and port destinations. Spanning 25 acres, the port offers a variety of amenities, including dining, shopping, leisure facilities, a zipline, and unique cabanas, alongside numerous excursion options like snorkeling and waterfall adventures. It serves as a key stop for four of the corporation’s cruise lines: Carnival Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Holland America Line, and Princess Cruises. Celebrating over a million visitors last December, Amber Cove accounts for over half of all cruise passenger visits to the Dominican Republic in 2023.
