On Wednesday, April 3, 2024, Cathay celebrates another milestone in its journey towards becoming a sustainability frontrunner. The company is delighted to unveil its 2023 Sustainability Report, highlighting its ongoing dedication and advancements in meeting sustainability objectives alongside its customers, business allies, regulators, and employees.

Chief Executive Officer Ronald Lam said: “Sustainability is inherent in Cathay’s purpose – to move people forward in life. We understand that achieving this purpose in a sustainable and responsible manner for current and future generations requires collective efforts. By embracing the collaborative ethos of ‘Greener Together’, we aim to lead by example and reach new heights in building a more sustainable future.

“Climate change, and materials and waste are our priority areas on the environmental front. As a pioneer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), we continue to lead the charge in accelerating collaboration and deployment of SAF within Asia. We are also dedicated to transitioning towards circular solutions by setting a clear roadmap for single-use plastics (SUP) and waste reduction. Meanwhile, in line with our longstanding commitment to making positive contributions to Hong Kong society, we are proud to engage in a multitude of community initiatives with our primary focus on youth development.”

Here are the key highlights from the 2023 report:

  1. Strengthening Climate Commitments: Cathay has reaffirmed its dedication to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. It has set a new target to reduce its carbon intensity by 12% from the 2019 level by 2030. To reach this goal, Cathay will focus on increasing the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), upgrading its fleet, and enhancing operational efficiencies.
  2. Expanding SAF Usage: SAF remains a critical component in meeting Cathay’s carbon intensity target and long-term net-zero objectives. Cathay is actively developing the SAF supply chain, conducting SAF uplifts on international flights, and expanding its Corporate SAF Programme through partnerships with new clients and non-governmental organizations.
  3. Embracing Sustainability: Cathay Pacific aims to reduce passenger-facing single-use plastic (SUP) items from an average of 7.7 pieces per passenger in 2019 to 1.5 pieces by 2025. Additionally, the airline targets a 30% reduction in cabin waste by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. These initiatives will integrate circular economy principles into product design, prioritize sustainable or recycled materials, and promote recycling or repurposing of used items.
  4. Engaging with the Community: Cathay has revitalized its Cathay Volunteer Team and participated in various youth-focused programs aligned with the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Strive and Rise Programme. Initiatives like the Cathay Community Flight and Aviation Exploration Days demonstrate the airline’s commitment to supporting and engaging with the local community.
