The decision of the Chamarajanagar district administration to shut the main Cauvery River tourism spots due to the increasing river water levels has given rise to lot of concerns among tourists and tourism stakeholders. They have insisted the district administration to permit tourists to visit these spots with all required limitations.

The Chamarajanagar administration constrained tourists from visiting spots close to Hogenakkal falls, Bharachukki falls and Wesley Bridge as a defensive measure. Charulata Somal, the Deputy Commissioner issued the order which will carry on till further orders.

During the last few days, tourists from around Mysuru and different areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala are visiting these places as water level in Cauvery went up after the discharge of more than 1 lakh cusecs from upstream Kabini and KRS dams earlier this week.

As per order, as water flow from dams amplified, flooding was stated in areas with close proximity to the river. SJ Ashok, the president of Mysuru Approved Tourist Guides’ Association said that there are enquiries from individuals who wish to tour these places, and this is the ideal time to view them. Tourists have opined that closure of these spots is not the solution. Tourism is the spine of the economy, creating employment for the locals. Hence, by bringing in more police forces, safety needs to be assured for the travelers.
