The tourism sector in Chile has achieved a significant milestone, marking a strong recovery following years of challenges stemming from social unrest and the pandemic. As of October 2024, over four million international tourists have visited Chile, representing a 38.8% increase compared to 2023 and a 7.7% rise from the same period in 2019. This growth reflects Chile’s resilience and strategic efforts to reposition itself as a leading South American travel destination.
Chile’s tourism faced severe setbacks starting in October 2019, when social unrest disrupted the nation. This was compounded by nearly two years of stringent pandemic-related restrictions, along with rising crime rates that affected tourism hotspots like Santiago, Valparaíso, and Viña del Mar. These factors led to a crisis that significantly impacted the nation’s once-thriving tourism sector.

However, the latest figures from Chile’s Undersecretary of Tourism show a dramatic turnaround, signaling a brighter future for the industry.
October 2024 brought in 456,569 foreign tourists, the highest number of monthly visitors after January (506,231) and July (460,267). These figures underline a steady upward trajectory, as Chile continues to attract international visitors with its diverse offerings, from cultural attractions to natural wonders like Patagonia and the Atacama Desert.

Argentina and Brazil have been pivotal in Chile’s tourism resurgence.
The rise in Brazilian tourism is attributed to targeted marketing efforts, such as the segmentation of Brazil as a priority market and the opening of new air routes connecting the two countries.
Verónica Pardo, Chile’s Undersecretary of Tourism, emphasized the role of international promotion in the sector’s revival. Strategic segmentation, particularly in Brazil, has allowed Chile to tap into untapped markets. The expansion of air routes has further facilitated seamless travel for visitors, boosting arrivals from key markets.
Efforts to enhance Santiago’s nightlife and rejuvenate popular destinations like Valparaíso and Viña del Mar have also played a significant role in attracting tourists.
The resurgence of tourism in Chile has brought significant economic benefits, revitalizing industries like retail, hospitality, and transportation. The influx of Argentinian tourists, particularly for shopping tourism, has been a boon for local businesses. Meanwhile, increased visitation from Brazil underscores the importance of sustained international promotion and improved air connectivity.
Despite the positive figures, challenges remain. Rising crime rates and infrastructure deficiencies have posed hurdles to the tourism sector. Addressing these issues will be crucial for sustaining growth and ensuring Chile remains a competitive destination.
Improvements in safety, transportation, and urban development in cities like Santiago and Valparaíso will be key to maintaining the upward trend in visitor numbers.
Chile’s tourism industry is on a promising path to recovery, driven by strategic initiatives, strong international promotion, and a steady increase in visitor numbers. While challenges persist, the industry’s resilience and adaptability showcase its potential to regain its status as a top travel destination in South America.
As Chile continues to focus on sustainable growth, the outlook for its tourism sector is bright, offering diverse experiences that appeal to both new and returning travelers.
