The 2023 Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) results have just been unveiled. China Airlines, a carrier based in Taiwan, has once again secured its position as a constituent stock for Emerging Markets for the eighth consecutive year. Remarkably, it has achieved the second-highest score in the global airline industry, solidifying its reputation as a sustainability leader within the aviation sector.

DJSI stands as the foremost authority on corporate sustainability performance, serving as a crucial reference for global institutional investors. S&P Global, an international sustainability assessment organization, meticulously assessed the environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) performance of over 13,000 companies worldwide, identifying the top 10% in each industry based on sustainability performance. This year, 61 airlines worldwide participated in the evaluation. China Airlines excelled by earning a perfect score in categories such as Waste Management, Water Conservation, Passenger Safety, Sustainable Marketing & Brand Perception, Business Ethics, and Transparency & Reporting. It also received the highest score in the airline industry for categories like Biodiversity, Talent Attraction & Retention, Information Security, Cyber Security & System Availability, and Labor Practices. This exceptional performance across all ten categories exemplifies the airline’s success in aligning its business strategy with its commitment to sustainability.

China Airlines has gone to great lengths to champion ESG initiatives. The airline has been an active participant in the SkyTeam Alliance’s “The Sustainable Flight Challenge” for two consecutive years. This year, they expanded their Sustainability Demonstration Flight program, becoming the first Taiwanese carrier to operate flights, both passenger and cargo, using Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). This move resulted in a remarkable 15-fold improvement in carbon reduction performance, earning accolades for “Best Inflight Supply Chain” and “Best Adopted Solution.” In an effort to further promote sustainability, China Airlines introduced in-flight waste sorting for recycling, which is gradually being implemented on all long-haul routes. Items such as aluminum cans, glass bottles, PET bottles, and paper waste generated from in-flight services are now sorted, sealed in eco-friendly trash bags, and placed in ECO CARTs, reducing the environmental impact through eco-friendly practices. China Airlines also became the first Taiwanese operator to join the SAF program, a joint effort between an international fuel company and a blockchain platform. They’ve adopted a new SAF corporate purchasing partnership model to provide traceable and verifiable carbon reduction reports. SAF will progressively be introduced on both passenger and cargo flights in collaboration with supply chain vendors and corporate customers. This initiative aims to support the global transition to sustainable energy, strengthen corporate net-zero partnerships, achieve carbon reductions for both parties, and make significant strides towards the goal of Net Zero by 2050.

China Airlines has wholeheartedly embraced the mantra of “Continued implementation of ESG to create sustainable corporate competitiveness” as its core philosophy for sustainable development. Their outstanding sustainability practices have received widespread recognition both domestically and internationally, with strong showings at the “Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards” for an impressive ten years in a row. This year, the airline achieved a new milestone by winning its inaugural “The Most Prestigious Sustainability Award – Top Ten Domestic Companies Award” and securing the top position as the world’s leading airline in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook.
