China Southern Airlines’ C919 aircraft begins its historic Haikou-Guangzhou route this Wednesday, marking a major milestone in China’s aviation industry.

China’s domestically developed C919 aircraft is set to begin commercial flights connecting Guangzhou in Guangdong province with Haikou in Hainan province starting this Wednesday. This marks the aircraft’s first deployment to Hainan, highlighting its growing role in China’s aviation market as it accelerates toward full commercialization.

The C919 is a single-aisle jetliner, designed to compete with the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. It officially entered commercial service in 2023. With a capacity of around 160 passengers, the aircraft is seen as a significant milestone in China’s efforts to reduce reliance on foreign-made aircraft.

To date, 14 C919 units have been delivered to three state-owned airlines, marking an important step in the aircraft’s operational journey. These deliveries are part of a broader effort to expand China’s domestic aviation capabilities and infrastructure.

In addition to its domestic deliveries, the C919 has earned airworthiness certifications from both the United States and Europe. These international certifications are vital for its acceptance in global markets, further boosting the credibility of China’s aviation manufacturing industry.

The aircraft’s production is steadily ramping up, driven by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the manufacturer behind the C919. COMAC has made significant progress in improving the jetliner’s economic performance and ensuring a strong safety record, both critical for its long-term success.

Domestic airlines, such as China Eastern Airlines, have been quick to incorporate the C919 into their fleets. China Eastern has introduced nine C919 aircraft, with the latest delivery being used for a flight between Shanghai and Chongqing. This marks the first time a C919 has been used for commercial flights to Chongqing, with daily service now operational.

As the winter season sets in, colder temperatures and adverse weather conditions, including rain and snow, have led to a surge in demand for travel to southern China. This has resulted in increased bookings for both flights and hotels, further fueling the commercial success of the C919.
