China Tourist Flow to Azerbaijan Surges with More than Fifty Thousand Visitors in this Year, Driven by its Visa-Free Regime, Solidifying Their Position in Top Tourist Markets

Published on December 25, 2025

Azerbaijan has experienced remarkable growth in the number of visitors from China, exceeding 57,000 for the period January to October 2025, representing a 50% rise compared with figures from 2023. This is evident proof that China is an essential source market for Azerbaijan’s tourism industry. As explained by Lu Mei, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of China to Azerbaijan, “The reason for this significant growth in the number of tourists from China is primarily due to the visa-free regime established between the two countries, making it easier for Chinese citizens to travel.”

The visa-free regime has played a significant role in making it easier for the constant flow of visitors to come between the two countries. In this regard, China has clearly made its mark among the leading sources of tourists to Azerbaijan and has secured its place in the top 10 sources of visitors to the Central Asian state.

The Role of Visa-Free Travel and Increased Connectivity

The visa-free travel arrangement has had a transformative impact on the flow of visitors from China to Azerbaijan. Since the implementation of the policy, the ease of travel has contributed significantly to the growth of tourists, as Chinese tourists are now able to visit Azerbaijan without the administrative hurdle of obtaining a visa. Additionally, the increase in the number of flights between the two countries has further facilitated the smooth movement of tourists, ensuring that Azerbaijan remains an attractive and accessible destination for travelers from China.

By October 2025, the number of Chinese tourists to Azerbaijan had surpassed 57,000, reflecting the ongoing success of the visa-free regime and improved flight connectivity. This growth is particularly noteworthy given the competitive tourist markets in the region, with Iran, Russia, and Turkey traditionally occupying the top positions in Azerbaijan’s tourist statistics.

China Emerges as a Key Tourist Market for Azerbaijan

While Iran, Russia, and Turkey have traditionally dominated the top spots for foreign visitors to Azerbaijan, the growing influx of Chinese tourists has made China a key rising market. The 50% increase in the number of Chinese visitors between January and October 2025 highlights not only the appeal of Azerbaijan as a tourist destination but also the strength of the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

The surge in visitors from China is also a clear indication that Azerbaijan is gaining increasing recognition in China’s tourist market. With the country’s rich historical, cultural, and natural attractions, as well as its growing tourist infrastructure, Azerbaijan has become an attractive destination for Chinese tourists seeking diverse travel experiences. This growth is expected to continue in the coming years, as China’s tourist market remains one of the fastest growing in the world.

Cultural Exchange and Growing Interest in the Chinese Language

In addition to the rise in tourist visits, the growing relationship between China and Azerbaijan is also reflected in a heightened interest in Chinese language and culture among the Azerbaijani population. Lu Mei noted that Azerbaijan’s youth is increasingly engaging with Chinese culture, with more and more universities incorporating Chinese language courses into their academic programs. This reflects the growing influence of China globally and the desire among Azerbaijanis to learn about China’s rich cultural heritage and to engage with one of the world’s most important economies.

This cultural exchange plays a vital role in strengthening the bilateral ties between the two countries and further enhancing the tourist experience for visitors from both nations. As the number of Azerbaijani students learning Chinese increases, it is likely that tourist interactions between the two countries will continue to grow, creating more opportunities for cross-cultural exchanges and strengthening the relationship.

The Future of Chinese Tourism to Azerbaijan

Looking ahead, Azerbaijan’s tourist sector is well-positioned to continue capitalizing on the rising influx of Chinese visitors. As the visa-free regime remains in place and connectivity between the two countries strengthens, the tourist industry in Azerbaijan is likely to see sustained growth in the number of Chinese travelers. With the country offering a unique blend of spiritual, ecological, and historical attractions, coupled with the ease of travel, Azerbaijan is becoming an increasingly popular destination for Chinese tourists.

Moreover, the growing cultural and educational exchanges between the two countries further enrich the tourist experience, as Chinese visitors are provided with deeper insights into Azerbaijan’s history and culture. The future of Chinese tourism to Azerbaijan looks promising, with the potential for continued economic growth and cultural understanding between the two nations.

A Bright Future for China-Azerbaijan Tourism Relations

The significant increase in the number of tourists coming from China to Azerbaijan in 2025 not only highlights the success of the visa-free travel arrangement but also illustrates that China has become an important tourist source market for Azerbaijan. With the number of tourists from China exceeding 57,000 by October 2025, it is clear that Azerbaijan is positioning itself as an attractive destination for tourists from China.

The steady rise in the number of tourists, along with an improvement in cultural interaction between the two countries, projects a bright future for the relationship between the two countries in terms of tourists. With the further enhancement of the relationship between the two countries, China will continue to remain a large source of tourists to Azerbaijan.
