According to the ship’s builder, China’s second large cruise ship, produced domestically, is slated for naming and delivery by the end of 2026. During a recent press conference, Chen Jianwei, assistant to the general manager at China State Shipbuilding Corporation’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co, detailed the construction timeline for the vessel. He revealed plans for the ship to be floated by May next year, indicating that its construction is already halfway complete, with expectations to undock by March 2026. Chen, who also serves as the construction director of the large cruise ship project, announced that a trial voyage is scheduled for June 2026, ahead of its delivery to the operator within the same year.

Chen compared this second vessel to the first domestically produced cruise ship, Adora Magic City, noting significant optimizations and a 20% increase in construction efficiency for the upcoming ship. He emphasized a focus on quality while also highlighting the importance of supply chain development and management alongside process innovation.

The new cruise ship will boast a gross tonnage of 142,000, extending 341 meters in length, which is 17.4 meters longer than its predecessor, and will be 37.2 meters wide. This expansion allows for an addition of 19 guest rooms, bringing the total to 2,144. Chen also mentioned that Adora Magic City, which launched its maiden voyage on January 1, is currently serving destinations in Northeast Asia.

Beyond the large cruise ship project, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding is looking at a busy schedule for the year, as shared by deputy general manager Zhang Wei. The shipyard plans to deliver 24 vessels throughout the year, including container ships, oil tankers, and pure car and truck carriers, marking an increase from the previous year’s deliveries.

On the same day as the press conference, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding named and delivered a dual-fuel-powered bulk carrier with a capacity of 190,000 dead-weight tons to its owner, bringing the shipyard’s total deliveries to 562.

Other leading shipbuilders in Shanghai, such as Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co, a subsidiary of the world’s largest shipbuilder, China State Shipbuilding Corp, have set ambitious targets for the year. They aim to deliver 24 ships, focusing on improving revenue, net profit, research, and efficiency, further solidifying China’s position in the global maritime industry.
