Costa Rica Struggles with Tourism Decline in 2025 as Health Warnings, Rising Costs, and Safety Issues Affect Global Travel: What You Need to Know

Published on April 20, 2025

In recent years, Costa Rica has experienced a significant surge in tourism, particularly from the United States and the United Kingdom, which has been a boon for the country’s economy. However, in 2025, this positive trend took an unexpected turn.

According to reports, in February 2025, Costa Rica saw a sharp decline in tourist arrivals, with only 270,810 travelers coming by air, marking a 7% drop compared to the previous year. This decline, as indicated by the Costa Rican Tourism Board, represents six consecutive months of falling visitor numbers.

Several factors are contributing to this downturn. Higher costs, fueled by the local currency’s fluctuation, have made the destination less appealing to tourists. Furthermore, a rise in reports of crimes, including assaults and thefts, has raised concerns among potential visitors. Additionally, a public health scare involving shellfish has emerged as a major factor. Recent tests on shellfish from a coastal region between Playa Herradura and the Guacimal River revealed the presence of paralytic marine toxins, leading to the U.S. Embassy banning the harvesting and sale of bivalve mollusks in that area.

In addition to these issues, mosquito-borne diseases, such as chikungunya, dengue, and Zika, have affected both locals and international visitors. As of mid-April 2025, over 1,900 cases of dengue had been reported, along with a handful of chikungunya, malaria, and Zika cases. In response, Costa Rica’s Ministry of Health has ramped up efforts to combat these diseases, including fumigating homes and eliminating mosquito breeding sites. Vaccines for chikungunya and dengue are also available in several countries, offering hope for prevention.

Despite these challenges, Costa Rica’s natural beauty, including its lush mountains and pristine beaches, continues to attract tourists. While travelers now have other Central American and Caribbean destinations to consider, Costa Rica remains a top destination for those seeking a unique experience in 2025.
