Croatia’s efforts in shaping a sustainable tourism sector, which included creating a comprehensive legislative and strategic framework for effective tourism management, have set a precedent as a model for tourism development across Europe and globally. This achievement was acknowledged when the Minister of Tourism and Sports, Nikolina Brnjac, received the prestigious Kristofor medal from the ADAC, the leading European automobile club, highlighting her dedication to fostering sustainable tourism practices.

“Thank you to ADAC for recognizing the importance of this Act, as well as all the efforts that the Government of the Republic of Croatia has invested in creating a strategic and legislative framework for the development of sustainable tourism in Croatia. This award confirms that the direction of sustainable tourism is the right and only direction to which we should strive”, pointed out Brnjac and added that the Tourism Act in Croatia, as the first country to adopt such a law, enables management of tourism development based on data, which aims to ensure conservation of resources and a more pleasant stay for our tourists, but also a better quality of life for the local population in tourist destinations.

The Kristofor medal, a distinguished accolade from the ADAC, signifies the organization’s appreciation for longstanding and fruitful collaboration. The ADAC’s decision to honor Minister Brnjac with this medal underscores Croatia’s position as a frontrunner in the realm of sustainable tourism. This recognition is part of a broader acknowledgment of Croatia’s tourism initiatives, with the World Tourism Organization (previously known as UNWTO) also lauding the Croatian Tourism Act for its innovation and importance. Moreover, the European Commission has praised Croatia’s tourism management reform, referencing it in the EU’s strategic tourism development document, the “Transition Path for Tourism,” as a prime example of effective strategy implementation. This strategy, aimed at guiding sustainable tourism development until 2030, along with the financial backing for these reforms through the NPOO, showcases Croatia’s comprehensive approach to evolving its tourism sector.

“I am extremely happy that Croatia is recognized in the world as a leader in the development of sustainable tourism, and we are one of the few countries that has this kind of Tourism Act, which enabled each destination to develop in the direction of sustainability on the basis of exact data, and our examples and good practices will serve as guidelines for the development of tourism in other European and world destinations”, said Minister Brnjac.
