Cross-border tourism between Kazakhstan and China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has seen a rise in volume attributable to the implementation of a bilateral tourism policy and a visa-free agreement. The steady flow of newcomers indicates that both of these regions are getting more accessible. Moreover, this development facilitates more collaboration between the two countries. Since the implementation of the bilateral agreement in November 2023, there has been a major increase in Xinjiang’s border tourism through border ports, including the Alakol Lake in Kazakhstan and Almaty, which are the most visited borders.

In addition, more border ports are likely to open which will increase the cross border tourism from China. In Kazakhstan, the most famous spot for tourist from China the Alakol Lake which is a famous for mud and baths in addition to swimming in the lake. Also, the lake is is quite near, only a two hour drive from the Baketu Bus port in the Tacheng border in Xinjiang. Hence, the lake is a frequent stop for tourists from Tacheng. For this reason local travel operators such as Shaanxi Gaoke International Travel Agency offer three day tours to this lake which is a benefit for the tourist as well.

Increased Connectivity and Collaborative Efforts Boost Tourism

The border ports in Xinjiang, including Alashankou and Horgos, have become key gateways for Chinese tourists to explore Kazakhstan, while Kazakhstan’s tourism sector has also benefited from increased Chinese visitors. Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan, has seen significant growth in Chinese tourist arrivals. In the first half of 2025, the city hosted 54,100 Chinese tourists, marking a 33.4 percent increase compared to the previous year. This rise in tourist traffic is a direct result of the easier visa arrangements and the closer cooperation between Chinese and Kazakh travel agencies.

The Horgos Cross-border Tourism One-stop Service Center, which opened in August, has attracted a variety of businesses to provide essential services for tourists, including travel agencies, customs declaration services, translation agencies, insurance companies, and car rental services.

Moreover, the hospitality industry in Xinjiang has also adjusted to meet the demands of international tourists. In cities like Yining, local entrepreneurs have expanded their services to cater to the growing influx of foreign visitors.
