On the 9th of December 2025, the island town of Jomalig in the province of Quezon in the Philippines observed a historical event because 80 foreign tourists from all over the world, especially from Australia and the United States, arrived at this beautiful island, otherwise known as the “golden paradise of the Philippines” during the 2025 Coral Geographer Cruise Expedition.

Jomalig’s Growing Role in Philippine Ecotourism

According to Marites Castro, the Regional Director of DOT Calabarzon, the department fully supports cruise tourism initiatives as part of its broader efforts to strengthen the region’s position as a prominent ecotourism destination in the country. The collaboration between the DOT and Jomalig’s municipal government aims to not only boost the region’s visibility in international tourism markets but also promote its sustainable tourism practices that emphasize the preservation of natural resources and the support of local communities.

“What we want is for the LGU to be well-informed, as this is crucial in improving preparations for the arrival of tourists. Proper coordination is essential, especially for cruise tourism, which presents a valuable opportunity for a town to gain recognition and further develop its tourism industry and local economy,” Castro shared during the event.

The initiative also underscores the importance of community involvement in shaping a sustainable tourism model for Jomalig. As the island gains recognition on the international cruise tourism circuit, the local government and tourism authorities are working diligently to ensure that Jomalig’s natural beauty and resources are preserved for future generations, even as the number of visitors grows.

Tourists Embrace Jomalig’s Beauty and Warm Hospitality

Among the visitors was George Maddox, a 65-year-old tourist and travel agency owner from San Diego, California. Maddox, who had not visited the Philippines since 1985, expressed his awe at the island’s natural beauty, particularly its stunning beaches. He emphasized the importance of better promoting the Philippines as a tourism destination and hoped for stronger tourism campaigns to attract more travelers.

“I’ve always told my wife, who owns the travel agency, that I wanted to visit the Philippines, and now I’m finally here. The island is beautiful, especially the beach, and I hope to return when the weather is a bit better,” Maddox said. His desire to return highlighted the deep connection that international tourists can form with the destination when given the chance to experience the warmth of both the people and the landscape.

Similarly, Susan Straub, a tourist from South Australia, was captivated not just by the island’s natural allure but also by the hospitality of the local people. Straub shared that the welcoming atmosphere and efforts by the residents of Jomalig to connect with visitors through cultural dances and music made her visit even more memorable.

“We found the place very welcoming, and the people made a real effort to engage with us. We truly enjoyed their dancing and musical performances. I joined the cruise to experience the island and get to know the people of the Philippines better,” Straub said, reflecting on her enriching cultural experience.

Strengthening Partnerships and Promoting Sustainable Tourism

To formalize the growing relationship between Jomalig and the cruise tourism sector, Marites Castro and Acting Mayor Dahlia Manalo of Jomalig conducted a Plaque Exchange Ceremony with the Island Trails Time cruise ship. This ceremony marked the beginning of a formal partnership between the DOT, the local government, and the cruise line to support future cruise tourism initiatives and foster further development in the area.

This collaboration is part of a larger strategy to position Jomalig as a must-visit destination for ecotourism enthusiasts, nature lovers, and adventure seekers. The partnership highlights the growing recognition of the Philippines as a prime destination for cruise tourism and underscores the island’s role in diversifying the country’s tourism offerings.

Why Jomalig is a Hidden Gem for Tourists

Known as one of Calabarzon’s hidden gems, Jomalig’s attractions go far beyond its golden-hued beaches. The island is a paradise for tourists seeking an authentic tropical escape, with opportunities to enjoy fresh seafood, visit quaint fishing villages, and explore nature trails that offer stunning views of the island’s lush landscapes. The combination of clear waters, unspoiled beaches, and pine-like trees provides a perfect setting for those looking for peace and tranquility away from the bustling city life.

Jomalig’s serene environment makes it an ideal destination for those wanting to experience the true beauty of the Philippines in its untouched form. The island’s remote location adds to its allure, offering visitors a chance to reconnect with nature and immerse themselves in the rich culture of the local community.

Sustainable Tourism: A Path Forward for Jomalig

As Jomalig continues to grow in popularity, sustainable tourism practices will be critical in maintaining the island’s pristine condition. Authorities have been actively working on integrating ecotourism principles into their development plans, ensuring that future tourism activities do not negatively affect the environment or local culture. This approach not only supports the region’s natural beauty but also provides long-term economic benefits to the local communities, who benefit from increased tourism while preserving their cultural heritage.

The growing interest in Jomalig also highlights the importance of community-based tourism, where locals directly benefit from the tourism economy while maintaining control over their land and resources. Through these efforts, Jomalig can continue to thrive as a sustainable and culturally rich destination for tourists from all over the world.

Jomalig’s Bright Future as an Ecotourism Destination

The 2025 Coral Geographer Cruise Expedition was a historic event in the tourism calendar of Jomalig as international tourists got the chance to experience its natural beauty and culture in its entirety. The emergence of the island as a tourist destination in the cruise industry has a very important place in determining its future course in ecotourism in relation to the partnership between Genting Cruises and the Philippine DOT and the relevant Jomalig government bodies. Jomalig is on the correct path in becoming a leading player in the tourism industry of the Philippines in a sustainable manner.
