Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) takes pride in highlighting the outstanding accomplishments achieved in its cargo operations throughout 2023, solidifying its global standing as a premier cargo gateway. With connections to an extensive network of 600 international and 65 domestic cargo destinations, CSMIA’s total cargo handling in 2023, combined with a notable 12% year-on-year growth in cargo Air Traffic Movements (ATMs), establishes a robust growth trajectory, positioning CSMIA as a vital contributor to the global supply chain. This achievement underscores the airport’s ongoing dedication to handling increasing volumes with efficiency and adaptability.

CSMIA’s cargo facility handles a diverse array of goods, including pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, automobiles, e-commerce, and perishables. In the international arena, the top three categories transported are automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural cargo. On the domestic front, consol cargo, pharmaceuticals, e-commerce, and post office (PO) mail lead the way. These categories reflect the airport’s proficiency in managing a broad spectrum of goods. Notably, CSMIA experienced a 12% year-on-year growth in the total number of ATMs related to air cargo operations.

The surge in e-commerce significantly impacted cargo operations at CSMIA, with the festive season of 2023 witnessing an impressive 87% year-on-year growth in e-commerce shipments. The demand for perishable items also saw a substantial increase. Export Mangoes set a record-breaking volume of 4,700 metric tons, marking a remarkable year-over-year growth of 318%. Overall agricultural products also experienced a noteworthy year-over-year growth of 44%. In a noteworthy accomplishment, CSMIA successfully handled its inaugural shipment of frozen ready-to-serve food products, such as Idli and Vada, utilizing specialized va-Q-tec containers to Amsterdam.

International cargo volumes at CSMIA displayed a composition of 55% exports and 45% imports. Globally, London, Frankfurt, Dubai, Chicago, and Amsterdam emerged as the top 5 international destinations receiving cargo from CSMIA, while domestically, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad held the same distinction. Notably, international airlines like Emirates, Qatar, and Cathay Pacific, along with domestic carriers Indigo, Blue Dart, and Air India, played a pivotal role in handling the highest cargo volumes at CSMIA, reinforcing the airport’s strategic position in both international and domestic airfreight operations.

In response to escalating cargo demands, CSMIA is actively enhancing its infrastructure, expanding warehouse capacity, and upgrading IT systems to increase efficiency and minimize dwell time. The introduction of a new PEB structure in the import section not only boosts capacity but also optimizes space utilization. The recently implemented Digital Docket Delivery (D-Cube) for the import gate pass system accelerates online processing, contributing to a reduction in both paper usage and cargo dwell time.

In addition to infrastructural upgrades, CSMIA proudly stands as the first Indian airport to launch the Air Cargo Community System Adani MIAL Air Exchange (AMAX), revolutionizing cargo operations with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), integrated systems, and digitization. Mobile applications like AMAX and Turant offer transparent, paperless, and digital operations, eliminating the need for physical copies in export consignments. The seamless implementation of e-Airwaybill, e-carting order, e-CSD, e-delivery orders, and e-gate passes ensures timely processing. CSMIA also pioneered the Air Cargo Community portal in India, enhancing operational efficiency and promoting improved supply chain planning.

Looking ahead, CSMIA remains committed to overseeing cargo operations with optimal efficiency and timeliness, ensuring the meticulous delivery of valuable goods to recipients with the utmost care throughout the process.
