Celebrating a decade of excellence, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) proudly commemorates the remarkable journey of its Terminal 2. Since its inauguration on February 12th, 2014, Terminal 2 has evolved into a pivotal hub for Indian aviation, setting higher standards in operational excellence and passenger experience. As Terminal 2 marks its 10th anniversary, CSMIA aims to pioneer digital empowerment within the aviation industry, leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as AI, MLOP, and IoT to enhance operational efficiency and passenger experiences.
Over the past decade, CSMIA has witnessed a significant compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11% in passenger traffic, with Terminal 2 welcoming 12 million passengers in its inaugural year and reaching a peak of 31 million passengers in calendar year 2023. Accommodating this surge, the airport has increased baggage handling capacity, processing over 100,000 bags daily within 15 minutes with a 99% efficiency rate as of January 2024.
Terminal 2’s iconic facade has become synonymous with Mumbai, reflecting the city’s progress and sophistication. Designed for energy efficiency and sustainability, Terminal 2 maximizes natural light and prioritizes UV resistance. The airport’s logo, inspired by the graceful peacock feather, embodies national pride and India’s diversity.
Since its inception, Terminal 2 has continually upgraded its infrastructure and technology to meet growing travel demands, introducing initiatives such as enhanced security experiences, Taxiway Z for improved airside function, self-service E-gates, and DigiYatra. Leveraging technologies like biometric authentication and AI, CSMIA offers a seamless and contactless customer experience.
Sustainability is at the core of CSMIA’s operations, with initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and waste. From emitting 29,294 metric tonnes of CO2 in FY15 to just 491 metric tonnes in FY24, the airport has made significant strides in reducing its environmental impact. CSMIA leads by example, adopting hybrid technology powered by green energy and setting ambitious goals for carbon emission reduction.
Recognized for its excellence, Terminal 2 has received numerous accolades and awards, including the prestigious “Level 4+ transition” in the Airports Council International (ACI) World Airport Customer Experience Accreditation.
