Dakhliyah Governorate Launches Major Tourism Development Projects to Boost Oman’s Visitor Experience and Infrastructure

To increase the region’s appeal to both domestic and foreign tourists, the Dakhliyah Governorate of Oman has made major efforts to upgrade its tourism infrastructure. This effort revolves around two major projects: the Jabal Shams–Grand Canyon Front project and the Jabal Al Sharqi Oasis project. These initiatives aim to improve tourism, encourage sustainable growth, and have a long-lasting effect on the neighbourhood. The Jabal Al Sharqi Oasis project is one of the key tourism development projects underway in Dakhliyah. At present, the project is 10% complete, with an investment of Omani Rial (RO) 293,469.

Current construction activities include the development of essential infrastructure such as deep water tanks designed for spring collection and site levelling. Landscaping is also underway, with the addition of public facilities that will enhance the visitor experience. The project plans to install footpaths, shaded seating areas, a children’s play zone, ample parking spaces, and internal and external lighting systems, ensuring that the oasis remains accessible and comfortable for all tourists.

Moreover, a pedestrian bridge is being constructed as part of the project, alongside retaining walls to enhance the site’s safety and accessibility. These efforts are complemented by engineering consultancy services, which are being implemented to ensure that the project meets high standards of quality and is sustainable in the long term.

The Jabal Shams – Grand Canyon Front Project: Enhancing Oman’s Iconic Natural Attraction

The second major initiative is the Jabal Shams – Grand Canyon Front Project, which focuses on enhancing the infrastructure and services around Oman’s famous Jabal Shams, also known as the Grand Canyon of Oman. This project is still in its early stages, with Phase One reaching just 3% completion. The total investment in this project is Omani Rial (RO) 2.94 million.

This project includes extensive site surveys and excavation work, which will lay the groundwork for the construction of a main gateway, perimeter fencing, and essential service infrastructure. Public restrooms, information points, and walkways are being integrated into the site to improve the overall tourist experience. Additionally, landscaped areas, viewing platforms, and dedicated family zones are being developed to ensure that the site offers both scenic beauty and a family-friendly environment. The master plan aims to provide tourists with unobstructed views of the mountain range and offers plenty of amenities for visitors.

Once completed, the Jabal Shams project will stand as one of the premier ecotourism destinations in the region, attracting visitors from around the world who seek adventure, nature, and cultural heritage. The careful development of this site will ensure that its natural beauty is preserved while enhancing its accessibility.

For instance, the internal roads project, which is already 88% complete, is improving access to residential areas and key service points within the wilayat. This development will streamline transportation for residents and tourists, ensuring smoother access to local attractions and businesses.

Another key project in Al Hamra is the Misfat Al Abriyeen development, which has reached 28% completion. This project aims to enhance the urban and tourism landscape of the area, offering modern services and amenities that will support the growing influx of visitors. Misfat Al Abriyeen is known for its picturesque terraced farms and unique architecture, making it a popular destination for tourists looking to experience authentic Omani culture and rural life.
