Published on October 22, 2024

Dalian Marathon kicked off at 7:30 AM on October 20th, marking the start of the 34th edition of this iconic race. With 30,000 enthusiastic runners charging across the starting line, the city of Dalian buzzed with energy. Participants navigated the city’s picturesque streets, driven by passion and fueled by the cool autumn air, while crowds of supporters lined the route, cheering them on with excitement.

Dalian, known for its many prestigious titles such as “Global Livable City,” “Culture City of East Asia,” and “Best Tourist City in China,” has become a popular destination for marathon lovers from around the world. The Dalian Marathon, also known as “Da Ma,” has built a strong reputation since its first run in 1987. It holds the distinction of being the first marathon in China to surpass 10,000 participants, and its influence continues to grow both domestically and internationally.

This year’s marathon, certified as an A1 race by the China Athletics Association, embraced smart technology to enhance the race experience. Facial recognition and intelligent material collection systems ensured smooth registration and race-day logistics. Runners benefited from precise race management powered by BeiDou satellite technology, ensuring a safe and seamless event. Along the course, lively cultural stations featured everything from traditional war drums to cheerleading performances, folk music, and square dancing. Unique Dalian cultural displays such as the Danxian Paiqu (single-stringed plucked ballad), Taiping Drum Dance, and local puppet shows added a rich, festive atmosphere for both participants and spectators.

The race featured three main categories: the full marathon, half marathon, and a fun run. The full marathon route of 42.195 km took runners through some of Dalian’s most scenic and historically significant areas. Starting from the modern Donggang Business District, the route wound through Zhongshan Square, continued along the bustling Zhongshan Road, and then swept past Xinghai Bay’s sparkling waters. After crossing a sea bridge, runners returned via the serene, tree-lined Huihua Avenue, with the city’s century-old tram system providing a nostalgic touch. The course offered stunning views, from sunrises over the ocean to lighthouses and windmills, creating an unforgettable running experience.

To further engage participants and visitors, Dalian launched a series of cultural and tourism initiatives that will continue through the end of October. Visitors are encouraged to explore Dongguan Street, a symbol of Dalian’s transformation, where they can experience the city’s century-old heritage. Another highlight is Gangdong Fifth Street, which showcases striking views of large ships and towering skyscrapers, making it one of the most scenic roads in the city. For those seeking a peaceful coastal walk, Suoyu Bay provides a perfect setting, while the cheers from the nearby China League One stadium add to the excitement. Additionally, visitors can embark on the luxurious “Laohutan” yacht, departing from Dalian’s old port, to enjoy stunning seascapes and delectable food.

The Dalian Marathon has once again proven itself to be more than just a race—it’s a celebration of culture, community, and the city’s breathtaking landscapes. The combination of a challenging course, vibrant local traditions, and Dalian’s natural beauty creates an experience that leaves runners and visitors with lasting memories.

Experienced runner Kanji ITO, who came specially from Japan to participate in the Dalian Marathon, told reporters that this is already his second time taking part in the event. “Every section of the course is particularly beautiful; it feels as if we are running through a painting! Dalian’s citizens are especially enthusiastic, cheering us on throughout the entire race. At the start, I also saw many well-known runners from abroad, which is a testament to the strong appeal of the Dalian Marathon.”
