The spirit of exploration has been reignited in the southern Philippines, as the second installment of the Davao Adventure Challenge (DAC) begins. This year-long regional tourism campaign, which runs from September 1, 2025, to August 31, 2026, invites thrill-seekers and nature lovers to immerse themselves in the Davao Region’s rugged beauty. The initiative, organised by the Department of Tourism Region XI (DOT-XI), aims to highlight Mindanao’s diverse landscapes while encouraging healthy competition among travellers.
The scope of the challenge has been significantly expanded for its sophomore season. A total of 30 premier adventure destinations have been curated across the region to ensure that every type of adrenaline seeker finds their niche. The variety of activities is exhaustive, ranging from high-altitude trekking to high-velocity water sports.
Participants are encouraged to engage in water-based thrills such as river tubing, white-water rafting, and the coastal excitement of skimboarding. For those who prefer the depths of the ocean, diving and snorkelling spots are featured prominently. On land, the terrain is conquered through canyoneering, spelunking in ancient cave systems, and scaling vertical heights at various wall-climbing installations. The sky is also utilized as a playground, with ultralight plane rides and the famous aerial attractions at Eden Nature Park offering a bird’s-eye view of the lush canopy.
While the challenge spans the entire region, Davao City serves as a primary hub with several flagship activities included in the DAC itinerary. One of the most physically demanding tasks involves the Mt Kalilongan hiking trail. To reach the summit of this peak, a gruelling ascent of 1,083 steps must be completed by participants. This trek offers not only a physical milestone but also panoramic vistas of the surrounding highlands.

For those who seek the rush of moving water, the Calinan segment of the Davao River is utilized for white-water rafting. This experience is balanced by more controlled, technical challenges found within the city limits, such as the specialized bouldering experiences offered at professional climbing gyms located on Torres Street. These urban sites ensure that the adventure is accessible even to those who may not have the time to venture deep into the rural hinterlands.
A significant portion of the Davao City segment is centred around the renowned Eden Nature Park. Here, the “Skyrides” suite of activities is featured, which requires participants to navigate a skywalk, traverse a zipline, and balance on the high-altitude skybike. Beyond these mechanical thrills, a more traditional connection with nature is maintained through a two-hour guided trek along the Eden Mountain Trail. These activities are designed to blend the comforts of a managed park with the raw beauty of the Davao mountainside, providing a multifaceted experience for DAC contenders.

A fundamental pillar of the Davao Adventure Challenge is the emphasis placed on community involvement. It is recognized by tourism officials that the majority of the featured sites are managed and operated by local grassroots communities. By funnelling tourists toward these specific locations, a direct economic benefit is felt by local tour guides, indigenous cooperatives, and small-scale service providers.
The partnership between various local government units (LGUs) is seen as a strategic move to ensure that ecotourism remains sustainable. Rather than focusing solely on the influx of visitors, the campaign is structured to ensure that the heritage and environment of these destination areas are preserved through responsible management. It is believed that the success of the challenge is measured not just by the number of participants, but by the tangible improvement in the livelihoods of the people living within these adventure zones.

The Davao Adventure Challenge is structured as a gamified travel experience. To participate, individuals must visit the designated destinations and complete specific tasks or “challenges” unique to each site. Upon the successful completion of these activities, points are awarded to the participant.
As the season progresses, a leaderboard is maintained to track the progress of the most dedicated explorers. At the conclusion of the season in August 2026, those who have amassed the highest number of points are rewarded with a variety of high-value prizes. These incentives include luxury hotel accommodations, round-trip airline tickets, and practical travel rewards such as Grab vouchers. For the most tech-savvy adventurers, high-end action cameras, such as GoPros, are also among the top-tier rewards, allowing winners to document their future escapades with professional-grade equipment.
Despite the abundance of activities available in Davao City and its neighbouring provinces, local tourism officials note that many of these experiences go undiscovered by the general public. Domestic and international travellers are encouraged to use the DAC as a road map to discover the region’s “hidden gems”.
The first season, which premiered in 2024, laid a solid foundation for this year’s expanded schedule. Season 2 aims to solidify Davao’s reputation as the southern Philippines’ adventure capital by extending its duration and expanding its selection of sites. Whether navigating river rapids, scaling a mountain staircase, or flying through the forest on a zipline, the Davao Adventure Challenge provides a structured yet wild way to experience the best of Mindanao.
