Starting December 14, 2025, commuters and travelers across Wales will experience significant improvements in rail services. Transport for Wales has announced a series of crucial timetable changes, designed to improve connectivity, reduce congestion, and enhance travel options for both local passengers and tourists. These changes are part of the ongoing efforts to develop the Wales and Borders network and are a significant part of the larger Network North Wales and South Wales Metro projects.
With these updates, the goal is to “strengthen community connections, boost the night-time economy, and provide more travel opportunities” for a range of passengers, from daily commuters to those looking to explore the beautiful landscapes of Wales. The new timetable will ensure that the rail system is more in tune with the needs of both the growing population and the increasing demand for more frequent and reliable services.

New Hourly Services and Expanded Routes for Greater Connectivity
One of the standout changes in the new timetable is the introduction of an hourly service between Chester and Wrexham, which will now see two trains per hour instead of just one. This move aims to accommodate the growing demand for transportation between these two key locations, reducing waiting times for passengers and encouraging greater usage of the rail network.

In addition to the Chester-Wrexham improvement, a brand-new hourly service on Sundays between Coryton and Penarth will also be introduced. This extension of the existing Cardiff-Penarth service will provide enhanced options for those traveling on Sundays, making it easier to explore the scenic areas of the region.
Moreover, travelers on the Heart of Wales line between Shrewsbury and Swansea will benefit from a new midday train in each direction, increasing the total number of services to five trains a day. This is a significant boost for communities along the route, particularly those in rural areas like Llandrindod Wells, who will now have more flexible travel options.

Late Night Services and Extended Routes to Support Commuters and Tourists
For those who rely on the rail network for late-night travel, the December timetable will also introduce a number of important changes. On Fridays, three later trains will be added from Cardiff after midnight, providing essential connections to Treherbert, Aberdare, and Merthyr Tydfil. These services will also include a connection from Cardiff Bay, catering to passengers who may be attending late-night events or working late hours.
Additionally, the 11:23 daily service between Cardiff and Holyhead will make additional stops at Craven Arms and Church Stretton, providing more convenient options for travelers heading towards these destinations.
Other changes include a new 05:37 train from Bridgend to Cardiff, supporting early commuters, as well as changes to the 07:40 Cardiff to Milford Haven service, which will now depart earlier at 07:21. This adjustment ensures better coordination with peak-hour services in Swansea and will provide a more regular commute for workers in the area.
Investment and Commitment to Smarter Rail Services
Transport for Wales has committed £800 million to improving the Wales and Borders network, ensuring that new, state-of-the-art trains are introduced to meet the needs of the modern traveler. These timetable updates are part of a wider strategy to create a more efficient, reliable, and customer-friendly rail system for Wales.
Ken Skates, the Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, expressed his enthusiasm about the changes, stating that “rail connectivity is absolutely vital in driving prosperity.” He emphasized that the expanded services and greater connectivity would provide real benefits to communities across Wales, enhancing travel options and contributing to economic growth.
Colin Lea, the Planning and Performance Director at Transport for Wales, echoed this sentiment, noting that the changes are another step toward offering a more regular and dependable rail service. By tweaking existing services and adding new ones, these adjustments aim to meet growing demand while improving the overall passenger experience.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Rail in Wales
The December 2025 timetable changes are just one part of a long-term vision for improving transport across Wales. The ongoing development of the North Wales and South Wales Metro projects promises further advancements in the coming years, ensuring that rail services continue to evolve to meet the needs of the modern traveler.
For now, these changes mark an exciting new chapter for rail travel in Wales, providing greater accessibility, improved services, and a more integrated network. With these improvements, Transport for Wales is not just meeting current demand but preparing for future growth, ensuring that passengers in Wales and beyond can continue to rely on efficient, reliable rail services for years to come.
