Delhi fog triggers cancellation of 16 flights at Pune Airport

There are cancellations of 16 flights to and from Delhi and Chandigarh causing serious disruption at Pune Airport.

It is due to fog engulfing much of northern India.

Hit by the cascading effect, flights to Rajkot, Chennai and Nagpur too have been cancelled, officials said.

The national capital is seeing a spell of chill as the minimum temperature dropped to 3.5 degrees Celsius.

This is the season’s lowest record, and a thick layer of fog engulfed several parts of the city.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted very dense fog and cold wave conditions for two more days in Delhi. The city could see dense fog till January 20, it said.

Owing to the fog and resultant low visibility at Delhi airport, several flights have been cancelled and diverted to other airports. The disruptions have caused cascading effects at other airports as well.

At Pune airport till afternoon, six arrivals and six departures were cancelled.

It is due to bad weather in Delhi and other parts of northern India.

All measures are being taken by concerned airlines.

Airport authorities and the Central Industrial Security Force, said Pune airport Director Santosh Dhoke.

Passengers of the cancelled flights, who tried to book alternate tickets, were in for a rude shock.

For instance, a Mumbai-Pune flight ticket, which generally ranges between Rs 4000 and 9000, was costing Rs 38,500.

Similarly, those who were trying to book a Chandigarh-Mumbai flight (in absence of a direct alternate flight to Pune) were asked to shell out Rs 31,000.

6E Pune to Rajkot (Indigo), 6E 957 Pune to Chandigarh (Indigo), AI 858 Pune to New Delhi (Air India), 6E6553 Pune to Ahmedabad (Indigo), 6E 6714 Pune to Chennai (Indigo), 6E 2481 Pune to Nagpur (Indigo), 6E 103 Pune-Hyderabad (Indigo) and 6E 5369 Pune to Delhi (Indigo) have been cancelled.
