Kicking off their innovative ‘Only one Washington, DC’ initiative, Destination DC (DDC), the capital’s premier tourism promotion entity, spearheaded a promotional tour in India from February 25th to 29th. This initiative was highlighted by the participation of Destination DC’s CEO and President, Mr. Elliott L. Ferguson II, who visited both Mumbai and Delhi, key sources of inbound travelers to Washington, DC from India.

The campaign was marked by engaging interactions with the Indian travel industry and press through personalized meetings and exclusive gatherings, aiming to highlight both the new attractions and the timeless landmarks that define the U.S. capital. India holds the fourth position in the list of international visitor sources for Washington, DC. Mr. Ferguson expressed his excitement about returning to India, noting, “The enthusiastic reception from the travel industry and journalists reaffirms India’s importance to us. Our targeted outreach efforts allow us to showcase the diverse attractions and experiences Washington, DC has to offer. There’s a common misconception that Washington, DC is only about politics, which is why we launched the #Only1DC campaign, to reveal the city’s rich cultural and diverse offerings beyond its political significance.” He also highlighted Washington, DC’s leadership in eco-friendly tourism, citing its recognition as the world’s first LEED Platinum City by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and its top rankings for park systems in recent years by the Trust for Public Land.

The ‘Only one Washington, DC’ campaign is a vibrant showcase of the city’s unique offerings, ranging from its culinary excellence, evidenced by 25 Michelin-starred restaurants serving global flavors including the Indian restaurant, Rania, to free access to the esteemed Smithsonian museums with their vast collections. Positioned along two rivers, the city offers a plethora of water-based activities and is home to expansive green spaces like the United States Botanic Garden and Rock Creek Park, significantly larger than New York City’s Central Park. The city’s rich history and iconic landmarks, including those at the National Mall, are key attractions for visitors. The campaign’s message was effectively communicated to leading Indian travel agents, destination management companies, and media, emphasizing Washington, DC as a destination for those seeking to explore magnificent architecture, indulge in fine dining, enjoy waterfront activities, and immerse in the rich arts and cultural heritage.

Following this fruitful venture, Indiva Marketing, the official representative of Destination DC in India, plans to conduct a series of roadshows in major Indian cities including Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune, with additional cities to follow, further expanding the campaign’s reach.
