Destinations International and Visit Detroit launch Destination Professionals Day on February 19, 2025, honoring tourism leaders driving global economic growth.
Destinations International (DI), recognized as the world’s foremost and highly regarded association representing destination organizations and convention and visitors bureaus (CVBs), has collaborated with Visit Detroit to introduce an annual event dedicated to acknowledging the invaluable contributions of destination professionals worldwide. On February 19, 2025, the inaugural observance of Destination Professionals Day will be held to honor the individuals and organizations responsible for driving tourism, economic expansion, and community enrichment.
Historical Significance of February 19
A profound historical significance is attached to the chosen date. On February 19, 1896, members of the Detroit Chamber of Commerce and the Detroit Manufacturers Club convened at the Cadillac Hotel in Detroit, Michigan (United States), to establish the world’s first destination organization, the Detroit Convention and Businessman’s League. Tasked with “hustling for conventions,” this pioneering entity laid the groundwork for what would evolve into a globally influential industry, shaping economic and social development on a large scale.
“February 19, 1896, was a defining moment for the travel and tourism industry,” said Don Welsh, President and CEO of Destinations International. “From that meeting in Detroit to today’s vast network of destination organizations, professionals have played a vital role in shaping thriving communities and economies around the world. Destination Professionals Day is our opportunity to celebrate their contributions and inspire future generations to join this exciting and impactful field.”
“As the birthplace of the destination organization industry, Detroit is honored to be recognized on this momentous occasion,” said Claude Molinari, CDME, President and CEO of Visit Detroit. “The legacy of those early pioneers continues to inspire us as we champion our incredible region, and as other destination organizations worldwide promote their own communities as hubs of innovation, culture and economic opportunity.”

Growth and Impact of the Industry
From its origins in 1896 to the present day, substantial growth has been witnessed within the industry. Currently, more than 10,000 destination organizations operate worldwide, encompassing a diverse array of entities such as destination marketing organizations (DMOs), convention and visitors bureaus (CVBs), tourism boards, sports commissions, and film offices. As fundamental pillars of the travel and tourism sector, these organizations have played a crucial role in sustaining nearly 348 million jobs globally. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, the sector was projected to contribute approximately 10% of global GDP—exceeding $11 trillion—by 2024.
Objectives of Destination Professionals Day
The establishment of Destination Professionals Day on February 19 serves multiple purposes: to raise awareness of the essential role played by destination professionals in fostering economic development and enhancing community experiences; to recognize and celebrate the dedication, expertise, and accomplishments of professionals within the sector; and to inspire future leaders by showcasing the extensive career opportunities available in this dynamic field.
Commemorating the Legacy of Detroit’s Visionaries
The significance of February 19 extends beyond a mere date on the calendar. It stands as a tribute to the visionaries in Detroit whose collaborative efforts in 1896 led to the creation of the first destination organization, marking the inception of a movement that continues to transform cities into premier locations for tourism, business, and cultural engagement.
