The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) announced the latest activation of an experiential series that brings San Francisco’s neighborhoods and cultural events directly to airport guests. Starting October 19, 2023, “SFO Celebrates Día de los Muertos” will bring the renowned holiday from San Francisco’s Mission District to the airport, with live music, dance and cultural performances from San Francisco-based Latino and LatinX artists.
Harvey Milk Terminal 1 will feature a beautiful altar created in partnership with Mission Center for Cultural Arts. The theme of the altar is “Tree of Life” and reflects the Mission culture. Passengers are invited to share the names of their loved ones at the altar. In Terminal 2, artist Adrian Arias will paint a mural “Ancestral Hummingbird with Moon,” influenced by his Peruvian background. There will also be live music and cultural performances in both terminals.
Held every November 1 – 2, the Día de Los Muertos celebration originated in Mexico and is now observed worldwide. Traditionally, Día de los Muertos is a time for the living to pay tribute to those who have passed away. In San Francisco, locals and visitors alike head to the city’s Mission District to celebrate both the holiday and the Latino and Hispanic heritage that makes San Francisco so special.
