Thailand is gearing up for a grand New Year Countdown in 2026, and this year’s celebrations promise to be unlike any other. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports have chosen Phayao and Su-ngai Kolok as flagship destinations to lead the festivities. Both locations have been strategically selected to promote emerging destinations while strengthening cross-border ties with neighboring Malaysia.
For the first time in years, Thailand is shifting its focus from its major tourism hubs like Bangkok and Chiang Mai to bring attention to two lesser-known destinations: Phayao in the north and Su-ngai Kolok in the south. By doing so, the Thai government aims to diversify the tourism experience, attract more visitors to secondary provinces, and encourage regional economic growth.
The countdown events will be centered around two major locations:
Both events will span multiple days, culminating in the traditional New Year’s Eve countdown on December 31, 2026.
Phayao and Su-ngai Kolok have been chosen for their potential to attract visitors while promoting lesser-explored regions of Thailand. Both areas offer unique cultural experiences and are strategically positioned to foster international relationships, especially with Malaysia. Phayao, with its natural beauty and floral heritage, is positioned to become a major eco-tourism destination. Su-ngai Kolok, on the other hand, serves as a cultural gateway between Thailand and Malaysia, making it an ideal location to celebrate the theme of unity.
The Thai government is optimistic that the celebrations will boost both domestic and international tourism. Official projections estimate that over 35,600 visitors will travel to Phayao and Su-ngai Kolok, a 38% increase compared to 2025. The celebrations are expected to generate around 85 million Baht in revenue, with Phayao forecasted to capture the majority of this income due to its tourism potential.

Additionally, the celebrations will highlight a broader regional tourism initiative. The government has allocated support for countdown events in seven other provinces, ensuring that this year’s festivities will have nationwide coverage. These provinces include Chiang Rai in the north, Udon Thani, Roi Et, and Chaiyaphum in the northeast, and Phang Nga, Songkhla (Hat Yai) in the south, alongside the national hub in Bangkok, anchored by the ICONSIAM celebration.
The highlight of Phayao’s celebration is its massive floral displays, which will transform the lakefront into a vibrant spectacle. Visitors can explore large-scale botanical installations and light shows, leading up to a stunning three-day drone light performance. The event will also celebrate the intersection of nature and technology, with a focus on innovation.
Su-ngai Kolok’s countdown will celebrate the unique cultural fusion between Thailand and Malaysia. Performances will blend traditional Thai music with Southern Thai traditions such as Dikae Hulu. A significant highlight will be the participation of senior government representatives from both countries, underscoring the symbolic importance of the Golok River bridge as a symbol of friendship. The event will also feature halal food stalls and workshops in traditional crafts, allowing visitors to experience local heritage firsthand.
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has outlined ambitious forecasts for these events. The combined visitor numbers for Phayao and Su-ngai Kolok are expected to exceed 35,600 trips, a 38% increase compared to the previous year. In addition to generating significant tourism revenue, the events will play a critical role in dispersing tourism benefits across less-visited provinces, contributing to the economic upliftment of Thailand’s secondary tourist regions.
The 2026 New Year Countdown in Thailand will be a groundbreaking celebration, with Phayao and Su-ngai Kolok as key highlights. These locations are set to become major players in Thailand’s tourism industry, offering visitors a fresh, culturally rich, and nature-filled alternative to the traditional tourist spots. As the government focuses on regional identity and cultural dispersion, these celebrations will not only bring a sense of unity to Thailand but also foster greater international understanding and cooperation. Don’t miss the chance to experience this unique celebration and be part of Thailand’s transformative tourism journey.
