Madhya Pradesh

As the celebration of colors draws near, Madhya Pradesh is preparing to display its rich cultural legacy and spiritual essence through the vivid festivities of Holi. Situated in a region of significant religious value, the state is home to two jyotirlingas, located in Mahakal Lok, Ujjain, and at Ekatm Dham (Statue of Oneness) in Omkareshwar. This setting offers a magical experience for both pilgrims and tourists. The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board is dedicated to promoting the state’s traditional and cultural ethos by supporting local communities.

Madhya Pradesh, renowned for its passionate celebration of festivals, transforms into a captivating spot during Holi. It beckons visitors to delve into its colorful culture and experience the warmth of its people. The Bhagoriya tradition holds a special cultural significance, with the Bhil tribe performing sacred rituals during the harvest season.

In Mahakal Lok, worshippers from across India come together to enjoy the festivities in the divine presence of Lord Shiva, where Madhya Pradesh’s first Holika Dahan takes place. The festivities are further enriched by a grand Maha Aarti at Sethani Ghat in Narmadapuram district, alongside the Narmada River, adding a spiritual touch to the celebrations. Chhindwara hosts the Meghnad Fair, uniting different Maharashtrian communities in a display of unity and harmony as they anoint Lord Mahadev with colors.

The Indore Gair, a massive celebration on Rang Panchami at Rajwada Palace, attracts hundreds of thousands of participants each year. The event features streets filled with joy and colors, and majestic water cannons, a tradition that dates back to the Holkar Dynasty. Participants use bullock carts to distribute herbal colors, engaging in the joyful act of smearing gulal on one another.

In the Bundelkhand region, particularly at the Ram Raja Darbar in Orchha, Holi is celebrated with intense devotion and enthusiasm. Gwalior offers music lovers an electrifying performance by the Saregama Music Group at Shinde Ki Chhawni Mall, further enhancing the festive atmosphere.

Principal Secretary Tourism and Culture Department and Managing Director, MP Tourism Board Mr.
Sheo Shekhar Shukla (IAS) highlighted that ‘Madhya Pradesh stands as a beacon of cultural diversity
and spiritual heritage, inviting everyone to partake in its mesmerizing Holi celebrations, creating
memories to cherish for a lifetime. The Heart of Incredible India celebrates each festival with a blend
of local customs and personal touch.’
