In Dubai, Uber has launched autonomous robotaxi rides alongside partner WeRide. Given the UAE’s goal of reaching 25% self-driving trips by 2030, Uber’s autonomous rides represent a key milestone for the nation. This collaboration, supported by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), will also improve the use of shared transport services in Dubai. Uber autonomous rides will be available starting today for both locals and tourists in parts of Dubai such as the busy Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah districts.

The RTA and Uber’s partner, WeRide, with whom Uber has been collaborating, recently conducted a series of successful pilot tests, which have culminated in the WeRide Robotaxi service. Passengers in the districts will now be able to use the ‘Autonomous’ feature in the Uber app to order a robotaxi. This partnership is the first of its kind in the region and aims to redefine the way customers experience mobility as a service.
As part of the rollout, the fleet of Robotaxis will be operated by Tawasul, the main fleet operator of WeRide’s vehicles in Dubai. During the first stage of the rollout, although the vehicles operate on their own, each ride will include a vehicle specialist to guarantee safety and assist in operating the vehicle smoothly.
A Step Towards Autonomous Mobility Aspirations
Dubai is one of the Middle East’s fastest-growing metropolitan cities, home to more than 4 million people. The city is already working on a strategy to be a trailblazer in the forefront of autonomous mobility, having specified that one-fourth of all trips must be autonomous by 2030. The city is also envisioning the future of mobility with the introduction of Robotaxi services in partnership with WeRide and Uber. The UAE experienced a remarkable uptick in the utilization of shared mobility services in 2024, with a 28% increase in smart-app ride-hailing. Uber and WeRide’s launch of the new trial service precludes the advancement of tech to meet the increasing demand for eco-friendly and efficient modes of transportation, preempting and advancing highly sought-after technologies.

Initially offered in the first half of 2023, the route between the Dubai Marina and the Dubai Mall will now continue through October. This extension comes after the successful completion of trials during the first six months of the year.
Self-driving Rides: A New Era of Autonomous Public Transport in Dubai
Dubai has been the first in the entire Middle East to implement such advanced technology. The extension will offer customers more advanced autonomous vehicles and, hence, the opportunity to experience a more advanced technology. The Dubai Autonomous Transport Strategy is to implement a 25% autonomous transport system in the city by 2030, and this collaboration will certainly speed that up. WeRide and Uber will help to reach the government of Dubai’s autonomous transport goals, and this will help WeRide to expand its autonomous business in the region. Dubai is of absolute importance for WeRide to implement its expansion as it plans to offer 1000 Autonomous Robotaxis by 2030.
Looking Ahead: Scaling the Robotaxi Fleet
WeRide is continuing to expand in the Middle East as well, where the company now has 150 self-driving cars, 100 of which are Robotaxis, and plans to expand even more in the coming years. The UAE is the first region in the Middle East to offer driverless taxi rides, and the success of the recently launched driverless Rides in Dubai will be a forerunner in the expansion of driverless taxi rides across the Middle East.
Integration of self-driving cars in Dubai and the UAE is expected to keep growing. The scope for smart self-driving technology and infrastructure in the region keeps it above the rest of the world. Dubai is aiming to incorporate several transport options, including public transport, to provide an integrated smart transport system for the use of its citizens as well as visitors.
Conclusion: A New Chapter in Dubai’s Transport Evolution
The deployment of self-driving Robotaxis in Dubai is a giant leap in the UAE’s quest to embrace futuristic transport technology. The collaboration of WeRide, Uber, and RTA is not merely a technological endeavor but is aimed at revolutionizing how individuals navigate and interact with the city. The commencement of the Robotaxi service is a strong initial step in making Dubai a world contender in the arena of autonomous vehicles. The UAE’s 2030 ambitions will be complemented by the partnership of these futuristic companies by entering the region’s transport market with a transformational model of shared autonomous mobility.
