For the first time in Canada, Pointe-à-Callière, the archaeology and history complex in Montréal, is showcasing an exhibition on the Olmec civilization, revealing its profound legacy. Running from April 18 to September 15, 2024, this unique showcase allows visitors to explore the rich culture and enigmas of the earliest known civilization in Mesoamerica. Nearly 300 artifacts are displayed, including some extraordinary pieces previously unseen by the public. The exhibition provides a profound journey through nearly 4,000 years of history, interaction, and tradition.

The Olmecs, known as the progenitors of Mesoamerican civilizations from 1600 BCE to 200 CE, have left traces found in later cultures such as the Mayas and Aztecs. The special exhibition, “Olmecs and the Civilizations of the Gulf of Mexico,” unveils this enigmatic civilization to a wider audience, inviting them into a captivating world.

A Fascinating Journey through Olmec History
Visitors will travel from the ancient city of San Lorenzo to La Venta and Tres Zapotes, exploring the civilization’s significant sites. On display are colossal stone heads, figures of jaguar-men, jade figurines, and monumental stelae, offering insights into the Olmecs’ societal structure and spiritual beliefs. These archaeological wonders also highlight their lifestyle, innovations, and the intense relationship with their environment, showcased through their architecture, calendrical systems, and script. The exhibition extends to include items from other Mesoamerican cultures influenced by the Olmecs, bridging past and present.

An Outstanding International Collaboration
The remarkable artifacts featured are part of a renewed collaboration with Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) and include masterpieces from twelve Mexican institutions, primarily the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico City. Noteworthy items such as a multi-ton colossal head, among hundreds of other objects, have traveled from various archaeological sites and museums in Mexico to Montréal.

“It is with great emotion that we have received these priceless objects, witnesses to the grandeur of the Olmec civilization. We are proud to present this exhibition, showcasing these treasures and giving the public an opportunity for an authentic encounter with this fascinating culture. The collaboration between our two institutions bears witness to our shared commitment to promoting intercultural understanding, and we extend our thanks to all partners involved. Their contribution has made this enriching and unforgettable experience possible for our co-citizens and visitors.” Anne Elisabeth Thibault, Executive Director of Pointe-à-Callière.

Olmec Facts and Figures
The Olmec civilization spanned from 1600 BCE to 200 CE, occupying what is now the southern Gulf of Mexico coastlines of Veracruz and Tabasco. The discovery of a colossal stone head at Tres Zapotes in 1858 marked the first recognition of the Olmecs, who are also credited with creating the Mesoamerican ballgame, developing writing, and timekeeping systems. Various Olmec traditions, such as offerings and festive celebrations, continue in Mexico today.

Enhancing the Exhibition Experience
A special issue published in partnership with Beaux-Arts magazine delves into Olmec art and culture, available at the Museum Shop for $21.95.

Guided Tours and Cultural Events
The museum offers daily 20-minute guided tours and 50-minute private tours by reservation, along with a family activity booklet. Cultural events celebrating Mexican traditions will occur throughout the summer, including Cinco de Mayo celebrations and a Block Party on the Pointe.

Lecture Series
A series of lectures will further explore themes from the exhibition, including the history of corn and its impact in America, and insights into ancient Mesoamerica.
