Disney Cruise Line has revealed its latest addition, the Disney Adventure, a ship currently under construction at the Meyer Werft Wismar shipyard. Significant progress has been made, including the installation of the ship’s signature funnels and the development of its upper deck features. Once construction is finalized, the ship will undergo sea trials in the Baltic Sea later this summer, followed by its maiden journey to Singapore, where it will remain based for the next five years.
One of the most innovative aspects of the Disney Adventure is its use of green methanol as a fuel source. While LNG has become a popular choice among cruise lines due to its environmental benefits, green methanol remains a relatively untapped alternative. Methanol is commonly used in the manufacturing of chemicals such as acetic acid and formaldehyde.. Unlike conventional methanol, which is derived from fossil fuels, green methanol is created through sustainable practices, such as carbon capture and biomass conversion.

This fuel has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by a minimum of 60% and lower nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 80%, while also eliminating sulfur oxide and particulate matter altogether. Despite its environmental advantages, green methanol is still in the early stages of use, especially in sectors like automotive, with global production limited to just 0.2 million tons annually, compared to the 98 million tons of conventional methanol produced each year.
By choosing this lesser-known fuel, Disney Cruise Line is positioning itself as a potential pioneer in the cruise industry. The adoption of green methanol aboard the Disney Adventure may encourage other operators to consider its use, much like how LNG has become the preferred fuel for many modern cruise ships.

At 342 meters (1,122 feet) in length and with a capacity for 6,000 passengers, the Disney Adventure was initially commissioned in 2016 by a different company. After the original owner filed for bankruptcy, Disney Cruise Line purchased the nearly finished ship at a significantly reduced price.
Built by Meyer Werft—the same shipyard that crafted the LNG-powered Disney Wish—the Disney Adventure could play a pivotal role in advancing the use of green methanol within the cruise industry. The widespread adoption of this fuel alternative will depend on increasing market demand, which could help scale up production and support the industry’s transition toward more sustainable cruising practices.
