The huge holiday time of China, the big “Golden Week” recently experienced a rebound of domestic tourism to almost the levels of pre-pandemic times, as international travel had yet to recuperate completely, according to official figures.

For the eight-day holiday, those numbers that concluded on Friday also came in lesser than what initially the government had predicted.

The domestic tourism revenue for Golden Week was 753.43 billion yuan, it was a 1.5% rise from the level in 2019, as per the the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, China. In 2019, the number of domestic tourist trips rose by 4.1% to the present 826 million in the recent eight-day vacation, the ministry said.

Both the stats were less compared to what the state media of China had cited earlier the ministry as forecasted – 896 million trips and 782.5 billion yuan in terms of domestic tourism revenue.

But, the final figure of tourism revenue still marked a revival to 2019 levels for the since China in 2022 concluded its Covid-19 restrictions, the Chief China Economist of Morgan Stanley, Robin Xing and a team said in a note on Friday.

They mentioned that spending returned to 98% on a per capita basis of 2019 levels.
