During a recent announcement at the fourth ordinary session of 2024, it was reported by Dr. José Marte Piantini, the president of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC), that the Dominican Government has initiated new air operations that will link the national territory with key destinations, including the United States, Madrid, Canada, and El Salvador. This move is aimed at bolstering the country’s tourism sector and its overall economic landscape.

Dr. Piantini underscored the critical role of air connectivity in supporting the productive sectors within the Dominican Republic. He detailed Frontier’s proposal to augment its network with routes such as Cleveland/Punta Cana/Orlando and several others, connecting various cities with Punta Cana, San Juan, and Fort Lauderdale. Frontier plans to operate these routes with Airbus A320neo and Airbus A321neo aircraft, offering flights three to seven times a week and projecting to carry approximately 497,637 passengers.

To further global air connectivity for Dominicans, the attendees of the session were informed about Air Europa’s application for a special permit to operate on the Madrid/Santiago/Madrid route, with operations slated from June 27 to September 7, 2024. This operation is expected to run twice weekly, on Thursdays and Saturdays.

The session also touched upon West Jet Airlines’ request for a special permit to fly the Calgary/Punta Cana/Calgary route, intending to schedule a weekly flight on Saturdays. The Canadian airline aims to carry out passenger and cargo flights from May 4 to October 26, 2024. It was shared that West Jet Airlines had managed to transport 227,698 passengers through 1,445 operations from January 2023 to January 2024.

The meeting concluded with the approval of an amendment request for the Economic Authorization Certificate from Sky High Aviation, a national air operator. This amendment will incorporate the Santo Domingo/El Salvador/Santo Domingo route into their operations, with plans to utilize two ERJ190-type aircraft, scheduling three flights a week. In its initial six months, Sky High Aviation is expected to offer around 13,968 seats and aims to transport an average of 8,474 passengers.

These expansions in air routes by the Dominican Government are poised to significantly enhance the accessibility of the Dominican Republic to tourists from around the globe, promoting tourism and facilitating increased economic activity through enhanced airline connectivity. This strategic development is anticipated to serve as a catalyst for the growth of airline tourism, underpinning the nation’s efforts to strengthen its position as a premier tourist destination.
