Durban Beaches Attract Record Visitors Amid Tourism Revival in South Africa, Here’s All You Need to Know

Published on December 23, 2025

A city in South Africa where the weather remains relatively cooler compared to other cities during winter is Durban. This city has experienced an incredible revival of tourism as more than 800,000 beachgoers flocked to the city’s beaches in December. This revival came at a time when the city had been faced with an uncertain period characterized by water contamination that caused several beaches to close temporarily.

eThekwini Mayor, Cyril Xaba, during the media briefing on Monday, 22 December 2025, highlighted some promising statistics in the tourism industry in eThekwini, and they were reassured that Durban is also doing well in terms of the tourism season, just like it used to be before the COVID-19 outbreak.

Durban’s Resilient Tourism Growth

The eThekwini Municipality, which oversees Durban and the surrounding areas, has been facing some criticism due to the temporary beach closures caused by water contamination. However, the city has quickly worked to address the issue, reopening three out of the four affected beaches. The recovery in beachgoers is evident, with a significant number of visitors already enjoying the festive atmosphere along Durban’s coastline.

In the 2019 festive season, just before the world was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Durban saw a record number of visitors, approximately 900,000. Now, despite the recent challenges, the city is on track to match these figures. With still a few weeks remaining in the festive season, the city has already welcomed nearly 500,000 visitors.

“This is exciting news for Durban,” Mayor Cyril Xaba stated. “We are seeing the kind of festive season we had before the pandemic, which speaks to the resilience of our tourism industry and the continued interest in Durban as a prime destination for both local and international travelers.”

Beaches Remain the Heart of Durban’s Tourism

Durban’s beaches are a major draw for tourists, and they continue to be the city’s primary tourism driver. Since the beginning of December 2025, more than 870,000 people have visited Durban’s coastline, underscoring the continued popularity of its beautiful beaches.

Despite the temporary closure of some beaches due to contamination, 22 out of 23 beaches are currently open, allowing visitors to enjoy the sunny shores, warm waters, and festive atmosphere that Durban is known for. Only Laguna Beach remains closed due to ongoing water quality concerns. However, authorities have assured the public that efforts to maintain water quality are ongoing, with regular testing being conducted to ensure the safety of bathers.

“We want to reassure all bathers that the City of Durban is fully transparent when it comes to beach water quality testing,” Xaba remarked. “We are working hard to maintain the highest standards of safety and cleanliness for our visitors.”

The open beaches continue to draw tourists in large numbers, with several beaches offering a wide range of activities for all ages. From beach sports and surfing to family-friendly entertainment and sunbathing, Durban’s beaches are integral to the city’s tourism recovery.

Impact on Local Economy and Tourism Industry

Durban’s tourism sector plays a crucial role in the local economy, generating revenue through a combination of domestic and international visitors. The festive season, traditionally a peak period for tourism, has been a major contributor to the city’s economic resurgence. With large crowds flocking to the beaches, local businesses are seeing a positive impact, particularly in hospitality, retail, and tourism services.

Restaurants, hotels, and resorts in Durban’s beachfront areas have experienced a significant uptick in bookings, with many establishments reporting a full house during this busy period. Local tour operators, transportation services, and event organizers are also benefiting from the influx of visitors, providing additional services and experiences for tourists eager to explore Durban’s rich culture, history, and natural beauty.

The city’s efforts to reassure tourists about the safety and quality of its beaches have been effective in maintaining confidence in Durban as a desirable destination. Visitors have responded positively to the city’s transparency and proactive measures, with many choosing Durban as their go-to location for a holiday getaway.

Restoration of Confidence in Durban’s Beaches

One of the most important aspects of Durban’s recovery has been the restoration of public confidence in the city’s beaches. After the temporary closure of several local beaches due to contamination, the municipality’s prompt action to clean and reopen them has shown a commitment to the safety and satisfaction of visitors.

Durban’s reputation as a top beach destination in South Africa is slowly but surely being restored. Mayor Cyril Xaba highlighted the ongoing efforts to maintain beach water quality, stating that the city’s public health and safety measures remain a top priority.

“We are working tirelessly to ensure that our beaches remain some of the best in the country,” Xaba added. “Durban’s beaches are not only popular with South Africans, but also with international tourists who come to enjoy the beauty of the coastline and the rich cultural experiences our city has to offer.”

Looking Ahead to the New Year

With the festive season well underway and visitor numbers soaring, the city is optimistic about a strong finish to 2025 and a promising start to 2026. Durban’s tourism sector is bouncing back, and there are high expectations that the city will continue to see an increase in visitors as the summer months progress.

For the remaining weeks of December, tourism officials are hopeful that the city will continue to attract large numbers of visitors, with bookings already strong for Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations. Local authorities are also focusing on ensuring that the city’s infrastructure and services are fully prepared to handle the expected influx of tourists.

In the longer term, Durban is positioning itself as a year-round destination, not just a peak season hotspot. With growing interest in both local and international markets, the city is preparing for a more sustainable tourism model, one that can balance the needs of both residents and visitors while maintaining the high standards that have made Durban a favorite travel destination.

Durban’s Tourism Resilience Shines Through

The fact that Durban was able to overcome current difficulties and accommodate more than 800,000 beachgoers during this current festive season is a testament to the resilience of the tourism sector in the city. This has managed to prove to tourists that the city is indeed a safe and friendly place to be despite current water contamination setbacks.

Durban is all set to move ahead in terms of being one of the leading destinations for tourism in Africa, considering its beautiful beaches, cultural heritage, and flourishing local economy. As Durban moves ahead into the New Year, it appears that the recovery in its tourism sector is also on track and that it will attract even more visitors to experience the essence of Durban.
