East Rail Line set to reach Hong Kong by mid-2022

MTR has mentioned that the cross harbour section of the East Rail Line can commence service as soon as June or July in 2022. The project makes East Rail Line the fourth railway to connect Kowloon and Hong Kong Island with the cross harbour section.

After the extension from Hung Hom station, the line will first reach a new Exhibition Centre station, located near the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, and then the Admiralty station. Jacob Kam Chak-pui, chief executive of MTR said the bifurcation works at Hung Hom station went well and expected October 31 to be the last day of suspension of service between Mong Kok East and Hung Hom stations for the works.

He also thanked passengers for their patience and understanding. Kam added there are 18 new trains and it is MTR’s priority to put these new trains into service The train tests for the full East Rail Line will be conducted soon, as the trial operation can begin as soon as the first quarter in 2022.

The nine-carriage trains will be running after the cross harbour section of East Rail Line commence service. When asked whether the trains would become packed easily, head of operation Sammy Wong Kwan-wai said the train traffic has became less busy after Tuen Ma Line commenced service.

Earlier citizens found there was water falling from the top of a nine-carriage train when the city was hit by tropical storm. On that Wong said relevant issues have been taken care of and arrangements on the new trains will not be affected.
