Celebrating two decades of dedication to the environment, Treebones Resort, nestled in the southern region of Big Sur, marks a significant milestone in its journey as a pioneering Eco Resort. Offering an unparalleled glamping experience, the resort invites guests to immerse themselves in nature’s embrace, staying in uniquely designed yurts that stand delicately on the Pacific Ocean’s brink.

The story of Treebones began in the early 1980s when a 70-mile stretch along Scenic Highway #1, affectionately named by locals, was rezoned to welcome visitors, thanks to the foresight of a local think tank group collaborating with Monterey County. This vision was brought to life by John and Corinne Handy and their family, who embarked on a mission to create a sanctuary that allows guests to connect with nature without forsaking comfort. Since its inauguration in November 2004, Treebones Resort has become a beacon of eco-consciousness in the hospitality industry.

Reflecting on the resort’s philosophy, Corinne Handy shared, “Our aim was to offer an experience that would bring guests closer to nature, rejuvenate their spirits, and provide a comfortable yet simple stay.” The resort’s yurts, inspired by the form of animal nests and equipped with transparent sky domes, promise a cozy retreat where the natural world’s sounds provide a tranquil backdrop.

John Handy reminisced about the early days when the concept of ‘glamping’ was yet to be coined, highlighting the initial challenge of conveying the unique experience of sleeping in a tent-like structure at the continent’s edge. Today, Treebones stands out for its exceptional amenities, including renowned dining options, massage services, and daily yoga classes, attracting guests worldwide to return multiple times.

The resort’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its off-grid operations and eco-friendly practices, including recycling and energy efficiency. In addition, Treebones plays an active role in the community by providing subsidized housing for its staff and sharing its eco-practices through guided tours, inspiring visitors and the broader community to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.

To commemorate its 20-year anniversary, Treebones will host a live outdoor music concert on October 19, 2024, welcoming both the public and the Big Sur community to join in celebration against the backdrop of nature’s challenges, from storms and fires to the impacts of Covid-19 and disruptions to Highway 1.

Addressing the complex issues tied to Highway 1 closures, Corinne Handy underscored the economic and environmental dilemmas facing the region, emphasizing the importance of responsible tourism to preserve this unique ecosystem. John Handy summed up the essence of Treebones with a guest’s words, “A faraway world nearby,” inviting everyone to experience the magic of Treebones Resort firsthand.
