The sleek trains have been built to endure the extreme temperatures and challenging conditions of Egypt’s deserts, operating safely and reliably in environments ranging from -25°C to 45°C.
Siemens Mobility, in partnership with Arab Contractors and Orascom Construction, embarked on the ambitious project back in 2018, with the goal of creating a modern, safe, and affordable transportation system for the country. The system’s construction has not only improved the nation’s travel infrastructure but also provided substantial economic benefits, creating approximately 40,000 direct jobs through the project’s development.
The new high-speed rail network offers more than just speed; it provides an experience designed for the local climate. Each train is equipped with a two-stage air-conditioning system that helps regulate cabin temperatures even during Egypt’s scorching 50°C desert heat. In addition to the Velaro, Siemens also introduced the Desiro High-Capacity regional train, which offers a maximum speed of 99 miles per hour. This depot is a key part of the broader “Suez Canal on Rails” project, a 410-mile stretch that will link Ain Sokhna with major cities such as Cairo, Alexandria, and Marsa Matrouh along Egypt’s northern coast. With the addition of these regional trains, Egypt’s freight capacity is projected to increase by 46%, supporting economic growth and enhancing the nation’s logistical capabilities.
