Turkey hopes to have a million Chinese tourists by 2027. According to recent estimates from Turkey, China will be among its rapidly expanding tourist markets as its number of tourists to Turkey reaches close to a million in 2027. Last year (2025), Turkey received 425,348 Chinese tourists, while more than 300,000 Chinese tourists have toured Turkey during the first seven months of this year (2026).

The rising momentum has been supported by Türkiye’s decision to remove visa requirements for ordinary Chinese passport holders from January 2026. Under the new arrangement, Chinese travellers can enter Türkiye for tourism and transit purposes for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Alongside easier entry procedures, expanded flight opportunities between the two countries are creating a stronger foundation for long-term tourism growth.

Türkiye’s Chinese Visitor Market Moves Towards a Major Tourism Milestone

Türkiye’s tourism industry is preparing for a significant expansion of Chinese arrivals, with expectations that the market could surpass 550,000 visitors in 2026 and potentially reach one million travellers in 2027. The projected growth reflects a broader strategy to attract more international visitors through improved accessibility, cultural experiences and premium tourism products.

The Chinese market has become increasingly important for Türkiye because of its high spending potential and longer travel patterns. Unlike short-break tourism markets, Chinese visitors often combine multiple experiences during one journey, including heritage exploration, food tourism, shopping, nature experiences and wellness travel.

The increase in arrivals has already shown strong progress. After Türkiye welcomed more than 425,000 Chinese visitors in 2025, the first seven months of 2026 delivered more than 300,000 arrivals, representing around 30% growth compared with the same period a year earlier.

The industry is now focusing on converting this rapid recovery into sustainable growth. Rather than only increasing visitor numbers, tourism stakeholders are aiming to attract travellers who stay longer, explore multiple regions and contribute greater economic value.

How Visa-Free Travel Is Transforming Türkiye-China Tourism Connections

The introduction of visa-free access has become one of the biggest factors supporting Türkiye’s Chinese tourism ambitions. Easier entry procedures have reduced travel barriers and made Türkiye a more attractive destination for Chinese holidaymakers planning international trips.

The policy allows Chinese citizens holding ordinary passports to visit Türkiye without applying for a traditional visa for tourism and transit purposes. The permitted stay period of up to 90 days within 180 days provides flexibility for travellers planning extended holidays across different Turkish destinations.

The impact of the policy was visible soon after implementation. Chinese travel platforms recorded a sharp increase in searches for Türkiye trips. Interest in flights to Istanbul increased several times compared with previous periods, while searches for destinations such as Antalya and Izmir also recorded noticeable growth.

This growing demand demonstrates how simplified travel rules can influence consumer decisions. For many Chinese travellers, visa convenience plays a major role when selecting overseas destinations, especially when competing with other popular international tourism markets.

Türkiye’s visa-free approach is therefore expected to strengthen its position among Chinese travellers seeking culturally rich, accessible and diverse destinations.

Expanded Flight Networks Open New Opportunities for Chinese Travellers

Air connectivity is another major pillar behind Türkiye’s tourism expansion plans. Increased flight capacity between Türkiye and China is creating more options for travellers and improving links between major cities.

Aviation cooperation between the two countries has allowed weekly passenger frequency permissions to increase from 21 to 49 flights. The agreement has also opened opportunities for additional connections involving Chinese cities such as Chengdu, Xi’an and Urumqi.

The expansion of flight networks is expected to benefit both leisure and business travel. Better connectivity allows Chinese visitors to combine Türkiye’s major tourism centres with less-explored destinations, supporting regional tourism development.

Istanbul remains a key gateway because of its global aviation position and extensive international connections. However, rising interest is also being recorded for coastal destinations such as Antalya and cultural destinations including Cappadocia.

With more flight choices available, Türkiye is expected to become easier to access for travellers from different parts of China. This improved connectivity could play a crucial role in achieving the long-term one million visitor ambition.

Cappadocia, Antalya and Cultural Routes Attract Chinese Travellers

Chinese visitors are increasingly interested in Türkiye’s combination of history, culture, landscapes and unique experiences. The country offers a wide range of attractions that match the preferences of travellers seeking meaningful international journeys.

Cappadocia remains one of the strongest attractions for the Chinese market. Its unique rock formations, underground cities, ancient heritage and famous hot-air balloon experiences provide a distinctive travel experience that has gained global popularity.

Antalya continues to attract visitors through its Mediterranean coastline, luxury resorts, beaches and historical sites. The destination’s combination of relaxation and cultural exploration makes it appealing for longer stays.

Beyond traditional holiday destinations, southeastern Türkiye is also gaining attention. The region’s archaeological heritage, religious landmarks and traditional cuisine are supporting the growth of cultural and faith-based tourism.

Türkiye’s tourism strategy is increasingly focused on promoting diverse experiences rather than concentrating visitors only in major cities. This approach could encourage Chinese travellers to discover more regions and increase tourism spending across the country.

High-Value Chinese Tourism Becomes a Priority for Türkiye

The growth strategy is not only focused on increasing visitor numbers but also attracting higher-value travellers. Chinese tourists are recognised as an important market because they often spend more and participate in multiple tourism activities.

Chinese visitors to Türkiye typically stay around nine to 10 days, with estimated spending ranging between $1,000 and $1,500 per person. Their travel patterns support various sectors, including hotels, restaurants, transportation, shopping and local experiences.

Cultural tourism, gastronomy, health tourism and faith tourism have been identified as major opportunities. These sectors allow Türkiye to create specialised travel packages designed around Chinese consumer interests.

Gastronomy tourism is particularly promising because Turkish cuisine offers strong cultural connections and diverse regional flavours. Historical attractions and wellness services are also expected to contribute to longer stays and increased spending.

By focusing on quality tourism rather than only volume growth, Türkiye aims to create a more balanced and economically valuable Chinese visitor market.

Türkiye Strengthens China Tourism Promotion Strategy for 2027 Growth

To support future expansion, tourism organisations and industry partners are preparing stronger promotional activities in China. These initiatives are designed to increase awareness of Türkiye’s destinations and encourage more Chinese travellers to choose the country.

Marketing efforts are expected to highlight Türkiye’s cultural heritage, luxury experiences, natural attractions and tourism diversity. Workshops and industry events in China are also being planned to strengthen cooperation between tourism businesses, aviation companies and travel partners.

Türkiye’s national tourism promotion efforts are expected to focus on building stronger connections with Chinese travel companies and increasing visibility among potential visitors.

As global tourism competition continues to intensify, Türkiye’s combination of visa convenience, expanded air links and diverse experiences provides a strong platform for growth.

Türkiye’s target to attract one million Chinese visitors by 2027 is in sight as visa-free travel and increased flight options fuel demand.

With a rising demand, easier access and smart destination marketing, China is set to become one of the most influential international visitor markets for Türkiye’s next phase of tourism development.
