The Yambaru Art Festival, an exhibition showcasing artworks and crafts across various municipalities in Okinawa Prefecture’s northern region, known as Yambaru, is set to run from January 20th (Saturday) to February 25th (Sunday), 2024. This marks the festival’s seventh edition in Yambaru.
Recognized by UNESCO as a Natural World Heritage site in July 2021, the northern Okinawa Prefecture boasts abundant natural beauty. This region, celebrated as both a spiritual haven and a village renowned for longevity, has increasingly drawn international tourists due to its ‘primitive’ allure—comprising rare flora and fauna like the Yambaru kuina (a species of water bird), as well as traditional performing arts and enduring rituals.
The festival comprises two main divisions: the “Exhibition Division,” featuring participation from 30 esteemed artist groups from Japan and abroad, and the “Craft Division,” with 20 groups presenting and selling personally selected Okinawa crafts. The event aims to host art exhibitions and interactive sessions centered on the core theme of nature and art, emphasizing the harmonious relationship between nature and humanity.
