Etowah’s Gem Theater Renovations: A New Era for Local Tourism and Economic Growth

Published on December 1, 2025

Recently the Etowah City received $100,000 to renovate the Gem Theater. This is much needed and the money, given to the City by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, will positively impact and enhance the Historic Theater and the city’s cultural offerings. With the renovation, the Etowah City Theater will positively impact tourism, make the Attractions more profitable, and contribute to the positive economic growth of the City.

The Gem Theater: A Cultural Landmark in Etowah

The Gem Theater has been a cornerstone of Etowah’s cultural and social life for decades. Originally opened in the early 20th century, it has played host to a wide range of events, from local theater productions to community gatherings. However, over the years, the theater’s infrastructure has aged, requiring substantial updates to continue serving the community and tourists effectively.

The $100,000 Tourism Enhancement Grant will fund critical improvements to the Gem Theater, including design work, flooring, lighting, electrical upgrades, plumbing, new fixtures, audiovisual equipment, and labor costs. These updates are expected to enhance the theater’s functionality, ensuring it remains a vibrant part of Etowah’s cultural fabric and a welcoming destination for both locals and tourists.

A Boost for Local Tourism and Economic Growth

The renovations of the Gem Theater come at an important time for Etowah, which is actively working to boost its tourism industry. The improvements are not just about restoring a beloved local landmark—they also present an opportunity to enhance the city’s appeal to tourists, thereby driving economic growth.

The renovated theater will attract more visitors to Etowah, especially those interested in arts, culture, and history. As the theater becomes a more modern and accessible venue, it will increase the number of events, performances, and festivals held at the location, encouraging more foot traffic to the city. This influx of visitors is expected to boost local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and shops, providing a much-needed economic boost.

Furthermore, the grant is part of a larger effort by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development to support cities and counties across the state. In total, more than $2 million in Tourism Enhancement Grants have been awarded to over 30 communities, including Etowah. This funding helps local governments invest in tourism infrastructure, creating long-term economic benefits by attracting tourists and increasing visitation to key attractions.

Revitalizing Etowah’s Cultural Offerings

Etowah’s Gem Theater renovation is not the only project the city is undertaking to improve its cultural offerings. City Manager Russ Blair recently shared additional good news during a city commission meeting, noting that Etowah had received other grants to enhance its iconic locations.

Among these grants is a $10,000 contribution from the Carnegie Foundation, as well as $91,000 from the Tennessee Commission to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026. These funds will go toward various improvements, including a new archival cabinet for the Etowah Enterprise newspaper, which will allow the city to preserve and display important historical documents. This initiative ties into the broader effort to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday by enhancing Etowah’s historical preservation efforts.

Blair also highlighted ongoing improvements to the city’s library. The grant will help modernize the library’s facilities, creating a more functional space that highlights Etowah’s rich history. Among the projects planned is the renovation of the library’s first floor, where a new archives and records room will be established. These upgrades will provide a more comprehensive experience for visitors and residents alike, making Etowah a more attractive destination for those interested in history and culture.

Enhancing Etowah’s Infrastructure for Tourists

In addition to the renovations at the Gem Theater and library, Etowah is also focusing on improving the city’s infrastructure to better serve tourists. One such project is the update of streetlights, some of which are over 110 years old. These original lights are being replaced with energy-efficient LED fixtures, helping to modernize the city’s appearance while reducing energy costs.

Additionally, the city is considering using some of the grant money to create a sidewalk that will connect the library’s parking lot to the newly renovated parts of the library. This addition will improve accessibility for visitors and ensure that the library and other attractions are more easily reachable, making Etowah a more convenient and welcoming place for tourists.

A Thriving Future for Etowah’s Tourism Sector

With the $100,000 Tourism Enhancement Grant for the Gem Theater renovations, along with the ongoing improvements to other local attractions, Etowah is well-positioned to expand its tourism industry. The renovations will not only enhance the visitor experience but will also provide long-term economic benefits for the city.

As Etowah continues to invest in its cultural assets and infrastructure, the city is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for tourists seeking a small-town experience with a rich cultural heritage. Whether visiting the Gem Theater for a performance, exploring the history of the Etowah Enterprise, or enjoying the library’s new archives room, tourists will find plenty to explore and enjoy in this revitalized city.

The city’s efforts to improve its tourism offerings will also benefit local residents, creating new jobs and business opportunities. With the support of these grants, Etowah is laying the groundwork for a thriving tourism sector that will continue to grow in the years to come.

Etowah’s Path to a Brighter Tourism Future

The award of the $100,000 Tourism Enhancement Grant for the Gem Theater renovation is the most significant part of Etowah’s work on tourism and culture enhancement. Etowah, by upgrading local attractions and amenities, is not only preserving its history but also opening new economic avenues. Improvements will attract the city to visitors, helping economically establish the area and give businesses a boost. While assisting Etowah’s enthusiastic and new colonial efforts, the city will… attract visitors of all sorts to a greater extent.
