Europe 70th UN Tourism meet in Albania sets stage for tourism growth, focusing on recovery, sustainability, and innovation post-pandemic.

The 70th session of the UN Tourism Commission for Europe convened in the capital of Albania, uniting 40 prominent representatives to propel collaborative approaches addressing the primary challenges and seizing the opportunities within the tourism sector post-pandemic.

This pivotal assembly marked a significant occasion for dialogue and cooperation, fostering an environment for the exchange of knowledge, best practices, and strategies aimed at navigating the sector’s challenges and opportunities. The gathering demonstrated the collective commitment of nearly all UN Tourism European members to enhancing tourism’s role in the region.

Highlighting Albania’s pivotal role in the tourism sector’s revival, UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, prior to the commission meeting, engaged with Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama to explore mutual priorities and avenues for future collaboration. Albania was lauded for its remarkable tourism performance in 2023, witnessing a 53% surge in international arrivals compared to 2019, positioning it as a leader in tourism recovery efforts post-COVID-19.

Discussions between the Secretary-General and Prime Minister Rama also encompassed sustainable tourism development, with a focus on promoting responsible tourism practices, leveraging digital innovation, and enhancing economic growth through tourism education. Both leaders emphasized the importance of building a resilient and inclusive tourism industry that supports local communities and conserves cultural heritage.

The meeting also spotlighted the adoption of a legal framework for the Agenda for Europe, a blueprint reflecting the collective ambitions of UN Tourism’s European members to adapt the region’s tourism ecosystem to contemporary trends and realities. This framework, rooted in consultations initiated at the commission’s 66th session in 2021, aims to tailor regional and sub-regional efforts to the unique needs of its members, reinforcing Europe’s position as a global leader in tourism innovation.

Looking ahead, the commission members received updates on the preparations for World Tourism Day 2024, set to be hosted by Georgia, and accepted Azerbaijan’s invitation to host the next commission meeting in 2025.

A focused discussion on Southeast Europe’s tourism challenges occurred during the second meeting of the Working Group for Southeast Europe, organized on the margins of the main event. This forum allowed representatives from across the region to delve into specific issues, including short-term rentals and regional investments, enriching the dialogue with diverse perspectives and solutions.

Furthermore, an upcoming side conference titled “Tourism Investments and Economic Development in Europe” will showcase the guideline “Tourism Doing Business: Investing in Albania”, developed by UN Tourism. This event aims to highlight global tourism investment trends, identify strategies to accelerate positive investment impacts, and share success stories and prospects for tourism investment in Albania.
