Europe's Top Costly Airports

During a time when financial hardships are widespread due to the global economic downturn, parking fees at airports have surged by as much as 260%, putting additional strain on travelers. Notably, Dubrovnik Airport in Croatia has been identified as the costliest in Europe for parking.

A study by Spin Casino examined parking fees at 300 prominent airports worldwide, focusing on the ratio of parking costs to the average weekly income in each country. This analysis led to rankings based on the most expensive weekly parking rates relative to earnings.

In this comparison, Dubrovnik Airport emerged as particularly pricey, with locals spending 74.77% of their weekly earnings on a week’s parking, amounting to $252.11 (233.62 Euros).

Following closely are several other European airports, including Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport in Serbia, where parking consumes 50.18% of the average weekly salary. Additionally, Tbilisi International Airport in Georgia and Gatwick Airport in the UK were notable for their high parking costs, making it into the top 10 list.

Here is the rundown of the top 10 European airports with the steepest parking fees:

  1. Dubrovnik Airport, Croatia – $252.11
  2. Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, Serbia – $89.64
  3. Tbilisi International Airport, Georgia – $43.32
  4. Gatwick Airport, United Kingdom – $329.01
  5. Malta International Airport, Malta – $131.26
  6. Henri Coandă International Airport, Romania – $96.91
  7. Cagliari Elmas Airport, Italy – $210.02
  8. Split Airport, Croatia – $96.12
  9. Warsaw Chopin Airport, Poland – $102.16
  10. Málaga Airport, Spain – $155.33

Commenting on the research, a spokesperson at Spin Casino said:

“If you’re planning to travel by plane, the expenses can quickly add up, and with reports that parking is becoming more expensive than the flights themselves in some cases, it’s natural that the cost of parking might influence where you decide to fly from, or whether you decide to park at the airport rather than using public transport methods.

“Our research looked at the cost of airport parking at some of the most popular airports, in a wide variety of countries around the world. We took into account the average weekly salary in each country, to determine how affordable the parking will be for residents, proportional to their earnings. We used this to calculate an affordability score for each airport, to make the cost of parking at these airports comparable between countries with varying average incomes.

“Princess Juliana International Airport, which is located on the Caribbean island St Martin, is 2024’s most expensive airport for parking worldwide, while in Europe, Dubrovnik Airport in Croatia topped the list, followed by Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport in Serbia. Previous research has shown that Dubrovnik has the most expensive parking rates within Croatia and now our report proves that the airport parking rates are higher not only than the rest of the country, with Split appearing further down the list, but also the rest of Europe.”
