The Saxon Hotel, Villas, and Spa in Johannesburg has unveiled a comprehensive refurbishment that beautifully blends modern African creativity with timeless elegance. Under the guidance of acclaimed South African designer Nelson Kubheka, the transformation honors the cultural and artistic heritage of Johannesburg while presenting a fresh, inclusive, and sophisticated atmosphere throughout the property.

About the Design

Nelson Kubheka, founder of Ommni Design, led the reimagining of the Saxon’s spaces with nearly a decade of experience in upscale interiors across Africa. His vision incorporates a modern African design ethos, blending contemporary touches with sustainable elements to ensure longevity and luxury. The refreshed spaces feature repurposed existing pieces alongside modern design elements, creating versatile and functional areas that cater to a diverse range of seating preferences.

“Inclusive design is a cornerstone of this project,” Kubheka said. “By collaborating with local craftsmen, furniture makers, and artisans, we’ve created a vibrant space that reflects the unity of diverse talents and skills. This transformation pays homage to the past while embracing the future.”

A Commitment to Art and Culture

As part of the hotel’s refurbishment, the Saxon has curated a collection of South African artwork from the prestigious Spier Art Collection. Renowned artists like Samson Mnisi, Lisette Forsyth, and Qhama Maswana have contributed to the aesthetic experience, offering guests a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region. These works will be rotated quarterly, ensuring the spaces continually reflect the evolving narratives of South African art.

A Culinary Renaissance at Qunu

The Saxon’s fine dining restaurant, Qunu, has also undergone a sophisticated transformation. Led by Executive Chef Matthew Foxon, the reimagined menu honors South Africa’s culinary heritage while embracing modern influences. The redesigned space features chic banquette seating, natural lighting, and atmospheric pendulum lights that create an inviting dining experience.

The New Olive Bar

The newly expanded Olive Bar now features a larger footprint, intimate lounge areas, and a striking bar display. The sophisticated ambiance is complemented by plush seating and bespoke lighting fixtures. Guests can enjoy a pre-dinner drink or light meal in this elegant setting, which opens out onto the Terrace, offering breathtaking views of the African sunset.

Sophistication in the Piano Lounge

The redesigned Piano Lounge offers a serene retreat for guests, overlooking the Terrace and infinity pool. Whether for breakfast, a light meal, or an indulgent afternoon tea, the space provides various seating styles to ensure comfort and relaxation.

Rediscover the Terrace

The Saxon’s Terrace has been transformed into an al fresco dining experience, perfect for taking in South Africa’s stunning weather and sunsets. Overlooking the pool and lush gardens, the Terrace offers a peaceful escape from the city, blending style and serenity.

A Vision for the Future

“With 24 years of history, the Saxon Hotel is proud to celebrate its legacy while embracing the future,” said George Cohen, Managing Director of Saxon Hotel, Villas, and Spa. “Nelson Kubheka’s vision brings together our rich heritage with modern luxury, ensuring each space reflects our commitment to delivering exceptional hospitality.”
