In its effort to position itself as one of the leading medical tourism hubs in the world, Malaysia has kicked off the Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026 (MYMT 2026) campaign. This bold project was officially introduced on July 24, 2025 and marked by the phrase Healing Meets Hospitality – summing up the country’s increasing association with a top standard of healthcare to match its world-famous hospitality. MYMT 2026’s objective is to incentivize international health travellers and spearhead Malaysia as the destination for affordable and best of class healthcare.
Malaysia’s medical tourism industry has shown impressive growth over the years. In 2024, the country welcomed 1.6 million healthcare travelers, generating a revenue of RM2.72 billion. This marks a 21% increase in revenue from the previous year, underlining the increasing global demand for Malaysia’s healthcare services. The growth in the medical tourism sector is not only benefiting the country’s economy but is also attracting international attention as a destination for quality and affordable healthcare.

This increase in international visitors is driven by Malaysia’s established reputation for offering top-tier healthcare services at competitive prices, especially compared to other destinations like Singapore, Thailand, and India. Malaysia’s healthcare system is recognized for its high standards in medical care, modern facilities, and internationally trained doctors. As a result, the country has become a hub for medical tourists seeking affordable treatments in fields such as cardiology, orthopedics, dental care, fertility treatments, and cosmetic surgery.
Further cementing Malaysia’s status as a leader in the medical tourism industry, the country was ranked among the top 10 medical tourism destinations globally by Nomad Capitalist in May 2025. This ranking places Malaysia alongside other prominent destinations in the medical tourism market, such as Singapore and Thailand. This recognition highlights the country’s growing importance in the international healthcare space and its competitive edge in providing high-quality care at a fraction of the cost of medical treatments in the West.
MYMT 2026 is expected to contribute significantly to Malaysia’s economy, generating RM12 to RM15 billion in medical tourism revenue by 2030. The medical tourism sector is anticipated to not only boost the country’s healthcare industry but also have positive spillover effects on other sectors, such as transportation, hospitality, and retail. With millions of international tourists visiting for medical procedures, the demand for hotel accommodations, transport services, and local tourism experiences is also expected to rise.
In particular, the campaign’s emphasis on sustainable and high-quality healthcare options will help elevate Malaysia’s position as a go-to destination for international tourists seeking medical treatments. The goal is to see the medical tourism industry grow in parallel with the broader Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, which focuses on attracting tourists to the country for leisure and medical purposes alike.

A cornerstone of the MYMT 2026 initiative is the Flagship Medical Tourism Hospital (FMTH) programme, which seeks to recognize hospitals that exhibit excellence in clinical care, innovation, and international patient services. This program is designed to distinguish hospitals that stand out in providing exceptional care for international patients while ensuring a seamless experience that caters to the needs of medical tourists.
The Institut Jantung Negara (National Heart Institute), Island Hospital Penang, Mahkota Medical Centre, and Subang Jaya Medical Centre are among the leading hospitals currently in the final stages of assessment for this prestigious recognition. These hospitals have been selected for their commitment to innovation and quality care, and the winner will be announced later in 2025. This recognition is intended to further enhance Malaysia’s reputation as a global leader in medical tourism.
The MYMT 2026 campaign has appointed Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza, one of Malaysia’s most beloved and influential public figures, as the campaign’s official ambassador. Her status as a symbol of trust, authenticity, and compassion aligns perfectly with the core values of the Malaysian healthcare system. By leveraging her influence, the campaign aims to raise awareness of Malaysia’s medical tourism offerings among international audiences, especially in key markets such as the Middle East, Australia, and Southeast Asia.
Siti Nurhaliza’s involvement underscores the role of soft power in promoting Malaysia as a destination not just for tourists, but as a healthcare hub that combines compassionate care with excellent medical outcomes. Her ambassadorial role is expected to resonate with international audiences who value trust and authenticity when seeking healthcare abroad.
As the Chair of the ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting in 2026, Malaysia is also poised to play a leading role in promoting regional cooperation in healthcare. This is especially important as the region seeks to address shared challenges such as cross-border healthcare mobility, health equity, and improving the accessibility of medical services. Through initiatives like MYMT 2026, Malaysia is well-positioned to lead these efforts, strengthening its position not just as a medical tourism destination but also as a regional leader in healthcare innovation and collaboration.
In preparation for the expected surge in medical tourists, Malaysia is investing heavily in its healthcare infrastructure. Hospitals across the country are upgrading their facilities, adding state-of-the-art equipment, and hiring internationally trained medical professionals to meet the growing demand. In addition, the country is focusing on making the experience as seamless and comfortable as possible for international patients, with services ranging from travel arrangements and visa assistance to language support and post-treatment care.
The emphasis on patient-centered care is another factor contributing to Malaysia’s success in the medical tourism sector. Medical tourists can expect personalized care that is designed to meet their unique needs, whether that’s ensuring language compatibility, offering extended recovery services, or arranging travel and accommodation.
MYMT 2026 – A significant stepping stone of Malaysia as the emerging global medical tourism centre. A perfect blend of reasonable cost of medical treatment and high quality healthcare services is what attracts thousands of overseas patients to come in Malaysia for treatment. By investing in infrastructure, forging partnerships with leading hospitals around the world and in the segment of sustainable tourism, Malaysia looks set to be a leader in the growth of the medical tourism market within Asia.
With the world’s population becoming increasingly mobile, and healthcare now incorporated as an important factor in travel arrangements, Malaysia’s dedication to quality in the medical tourism sector will continue to create greater standards that the industry has yet to encounter. Committed to trust, quality and affordability will enable Malaysia to surpass expectations and give patients around the world an opportunity to experience excellence in healthcare and wellness.
