On April 22, 1970, Earth Day was inaugurated with over 20 million participants across the United States taking part in activities at elementary and secondary schools, universities, and community venues. The Library of Congress notes that the event was championed by US Senator Gaylord Nelson, who mobilized students in support of environmental initiatives.

Marking its 54th anniversary, Earth Day is being spotlighted by Fareportal, the New York-based travel technology firm responsible for online travel agencies such as CheapOair and OneTravel. They are focusing on seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are pioneers in sustainable tourism. Featured in an article on CheapOair’s Miles Away blog, these sites are celebrated for their dedication to conserving natural and cultural assets, while encouraging travel practices that limit visitor numbers to certain areas daily.

The list, titled “7 UNESCO Sites Leading the Way in Sustainable Tourism,” highlights exceptional destinations from the magnificent Great Barrier Reef in Australia to Tongariro National Park, New Zealand’s oldest national park and a dual World Heritage Site. It provides a compelling selection for those wishing to explore the globe with an eco-friendly approach.

Fareportal President Glenn Cusano comments, “At Fareportal, we recognize the pivotal role travelers play in shaping the future of tourism. By spotlighting these exceptional UNESCO sites, we hope to encourage responsible travel practices and foster a deeper appreciation for destinations that prioritize sustainability.”
