Published on December 20, 2025

Celebrate singapore’s rich history with immersive exhibitions like ‘singapore odyssea’ and ‘once upon a tide’ at the national museum of singapore.

In commemoration of Singapore’s 60th anniversary of independence, the National Museum of Singapore (NMS) has launched two exciting and immersive experiences that chronicle the nation’s remarkable transformation over the past 700 years. The exhibitions, “Singapore Odyssea: A Journey Through Time” and “Once Upon a Tide: Singapore’s Journey from Settlement to Global City”, provide visitors with an unparalleled opportunity to explore the historical milestones that shaped Singapore into the global powerhouse it is today.

Both exhibitions combine cutting-edge multimedia technology with experiential storytelling to showcase Singapore’s rich cultural heritage, offering an engaging and educational journey for both locals and international visitors.

“Singapore Odyssea: A Journey Through Time”: An Immersive Multimedia Experience

The journey begins at the Shaw Foundation Glass Rotunda, where visitors are welcomed into the permanent “Singapore Odyssea: A Journey Through Time” exhibition. This immersive experience invites visitors to witness pivotal moments in Singapore’s history, from its early maritime connections to its rise as a global city.

Using an RFID-enabled wristband, visitors can adopt one of nine Magical Companions inspired by Singapore’s native fauna, which guide them through the exhibition and unlock hidden content layers about the country’s history. The exhibition begins with a two-minute light show that maps the evolution of maritime routes that connected Singapore to the world, setting the stage for a deep dive into the nation’s history.

As visitors move through the gallery, they “time-travel” through animated wall projections, rich soundscapes, and visual storytelling that bring to life significant chapters of Singapore’s past. The experience culminates at the base of the Glass Rotunda, where a digital waterfall curtain reveals Singapore’s historical moments and concludes with a dynamic media show about the city’s myths and origins.

“Once Upon a Tide: Singapore’s Journey from Settlement to Global City”

To continue their exploration, visitors can immerse themselves in the “Once Upon a Tide: Singapore’s Journey from Settlement to Global City” exhibition, which runs until October 9, 2026. This exhibition delves into Singapore’s maritime roots and how the sea and river have shaped the country’s evolution, from a bustling 14th-century port to a global financial center.

The exhibition features over 350 artefacts from Singapore’s National Collection and is divided into five thematic sections. Each section provides a unique perspective on the island’s early prominence, trading activities, and its transformation into a global city. Highlights include interactive experiences, such as the Sampan Challenge, where visitors simulate ferrying passengers across the Singapore River, and engaging digital features like a Singlish quiz.

One of the exhibition’s most impactful features is its focus on personal stories and first-person accounts, which reflect the contributions of Singaporeans and local organizations to the nation’s global success. The final section encourages visitors to reflect on their own values and aspirations, contributing to Singapore’s evolving identity through an interactive RFID-wristband experience.

Reflecting on Singapore’s Identity and Future

Both exhibitions offer visitors a chance to reflect on Singapore’s rich history while exploring the nation’s future. The interactive elements of the exhibits, including the RFID wristband features, allow guests to engage with the content on a personal level. As visitors move through these curated experiences, they can connect emotionally with the evolution of Singapore, engaging with questions about the city’s identity and contributing to a collective vision of its future.

These exhibitions are part of the National Museum of Singapore’s ongoing efforts to celebrate the nation’s cultural heritage while highlighting the resilience, innovation, and community spirit that has shaped Singapore’s path to success. Through these immersive experiences, visitors are not just learning about the past; they are actively engaging in the future of this dynamic, ever-evolving nation.

The National Museum of Singapore‘s two new exhibitions offer an unforgettable experience for travelers and history enthusiasts alike. As Singapore celebrates its 60th anniversary, these exhibits provide an incredible opportunity to explore the country’s evolution from a humble settlement to a leading global city.
