Zhangjiakou

Zhangjiakou, a key venue for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, captivated global audiences as it hosted a multitude of winter sports competitions, showcasing exceptional athletic prowess. This event spotlighted Zhangjiakou on the international stage, highlighting its prominence in the realm of ice and snow sports. Yet, the city offers even more beyond these athletic endeavors.

Located in Hebei Province, northern China, Zhangjiakou is nestled between the Inner Mongolian Plateau and the North China Plain, bisected by the Yin Mountains into two distinct regions. With an expansive territory of 36,800 square kilometers, it boasts a population of approximately 4.07 million.

Historically, Zhangjiakou has played a crucial role as a strategic military and trade juncture, especially noted for the Great Wall that snakes through its terrain. Since the eras of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Zhangku Road has been a vital conduit for trade and cultural interaction, linking Zhangjiakou with Ulan Bator (historically Kulun) and extending to Chita in Russia, marking it a segment of the grassland Silk Road. Furthermore, Zhangjiakou serves as a terminus for the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway, inaugurated in 1909 as China’s first self-designed and constructed railway.

The documentary “Colorful Zhangjiakou,” divided into five segments—red, yellow, green, white, and multicolored—brilliantly captures the essence of this Olympic city. It weaves together the city’s rich history and contemporary flair, blending tradition with modernity, culture with nature, and merging technology with sports, offering viewers a glimpse into the diverse and captivating allure of Zhangjiakou.
