Published on October 3, 2024

Sonamarg’s tourism has surged dramatically, rising from 58,000 visitors in 2019 to over 661,000 in 2024, marking a transformative growth in Kashmir.

Sonamarg, a breathtaking destination nestled in the Ganderbal district of central Kashmir, has witnessed an extraordinary surge in tourism over the past five years, with visitor numbers reaching an impressive 661,539 this year.

As reported by the Kashmir News Observer, Sonamarg has experienced an 11% increase in footfall and a staggering 1800% rise in tourism revenue. Back in 2019, the region attracted 58,309 tourists, but by 2024, that number has skyrocketed, highlighting Sonamarg’s growing popularity as a must-visit destination.

The financial impact of this tourism boom is equally noteworthy. In 2020, tourism revenue was recorded at ₹1.63 lakh. The following year saw a rise to ₹3.51 lakh, and by 2022, earnings jumped to ₹9.7 lakh. The trend continued into 2023, with revenues reaching ₹25.8 lakh, culminating in an impressive ₹30.68 lakh this year.

To manage the increased waste generated by the growing number of visitors, a Solid Waste Management Plant was established in Sarbal, Sonamarg, in 2020. This facility is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including an electromagnetic disintegrator, a 5-MT auto insta-composter, and a segregator, ensuring the pristine beauty of the region is preserved.

Currently, Sonamarg offers 1,270 rooms across government and private accommodations, with additional camping sites developed to cater to the influx of tourists. However, despite this remarkable growth, there have been no new hostel registrations for the 2023-24 period, and the registration of horse riders and snow bikers remains under the oversight of the Department of Tourism.

The department has been proactive in enhancing the region’s tourism infrastructure, creating 25 tourism assets, 19 of which have already been outsourced. This ongoing development promises to further bolster Sonamarg’s reputation as a premier destination for both adventure seekers and nature lovers alike.

With its stunning landscapes and growing tourism facilities, Sonamarg is poised to become a leading travel destination in Kashmir, offering unforgettable experiences for all who visit.
