In its ongoing commitment to enhance runway safety nationwide, the FAA is introducing pilots to a readily available safety resource known as the Arrival Alert Notice (AAN). AAN serves as a planning and awareness aid, aiding pilots in steering clear of incorrect taxiways, runways, or airports during landing procedures.

“This add-on to our From the Flight Deck series is one of the many proactive steps we are taking to address runway safety and help pilots remain vigilant,” said Jeffrey Planty, vice president for FAA Safety & Technical Training.

General Aviation pilots are responsible for 83 percent of wrong-surface events, with commercial pilots comprising the remaining portion. As a pre-flight measure, pilots have the option to utilize this tool, accessing a map of their chosen airport and gaining an aerial perspective of the airport’s layout along with pertinent safety details.

The FAA initiated testing of the tool in 2022 and discovered that Arrival Alert Notices (AANs) effectively reduce the risks associated with wrong-surface landings.
