Foreign Office: Travellers to Belgium may expect delay

The Foreign Office is warning those heading to Belgium to expect delays on major roads as farmers ramp up their protests against EU-imposed farming practices.

In the latest update to its travel advice, the Foreign Office said protests are taking place across the country.

Farmers caused gridlock around the Belgian port of Zeebrugge yesterday when tractors blocked roads in and out and in some cities they have set fire to hay bales.

The Foreign Office warning follows a similar alert issued to those travelling to France earlier this week.

Farmers across Europe are protesting about EU restrictions on land use and fertilisers.

In France, the roadblocks caused delays for British skiers heading to and from ski resorts last weekend.

There are fears that the action might be ramped up at the start of the February half-term holiday on 10 February.

In its update for travel to Belgium, the Foreign Office said that since mid-January, protests by farmers are taking place across Belgium.

Action has included blocking major roads and delaying traffic, including on the edges of large cities.

Monitor the media, avoid protests, expect delays on some major roads and follow the advice of the authorities.
