Economic and Strategic Importance for Portugal

The return of Formula 1® is seen as a major economic and strategic win for Portugal. The Portuguese government has highlighted the event’s substantial economic impact, with an estimated contribution of at least 140 million euros per Grand Prix. Additionally, the event is expected to draw over 200,000 visitors to the region, including 150,000 spectators, with a significant number coming from international markets. This influx of visitors will not only benefit the tourism sector but also provide a substantial boost to local businesses and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Algarve.

The government also frames the event as a way to enhance Portugal’s international image, presenting the country as modern, ambitious, and dynamic to a global audience of nearly one billion viewers. The Formula 1® Grand Prix aligns with Portugal’s National Tourism Strategy and supports regional development, bringing long-term benefits to both the Algarve and the country as a whole.

A Collaborative Effort Between Key Stakeholders

The return of Formula 1® to Portugal has only been made possible through a partnership between several key stakeholders. The agreement was formalized in London, with major signatories including the Portuguese Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida, and Secretary of State for Tourism, Commerce, and Services, Pedro Machado. The deal was negotiated between Formula One Management (FOM), the Portuguese government, and the local circuit operator, Parkalgar.

The promoter, Jaime Costa, Chairman and CEO of the Algarve International Circuit, acknowledged the vital support from the Portuguese government and tourism authorities. He emphasized that the return of F1® would not only bring significant economic benefits but also enhance the profile of the Algarve as a leading destination for international events.

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1®, also praised the efforts of the Portuguese officials, confirming the high demand for the return of the Portuguese Grand Prix and the significant support from the local government in making it happen.
